Star Wars Room Build - UPDATED!

Both Columns are assembled, still a way to go on these before paint, but pretty happy thus far with the progress.

Sunday's work is complete, and the foam test for the "YT - Pads" is also finished. I have to say that I liked the way the foam shaped, and the thickness for my space also works. There is a good amount of shaping, sanding, and of course finishing in my future but I think this material and process will work nicely.

Thank you very much for the kind words, those kind of comments are always encouraging :)

Hey Marvin, thanks so much. Never hesitate to tell me to get my butt back to work! Glad you are enjoying it.

So this weekends progress was a bit frustrating. Creatively I have struggled with a certain aspect of the room. My first go around with the project ended, but not completely or successfully for me. Which is why after so many years of tinkering with it I am determined to finish it correctly. That being said, every single aspect is getting a bit criticized by myself.

The images below are not going to work for me, at least not for the location that I am working on. The panel is pretty interesting, but I think it will be used elsewhere in the project. After talking it over with the "King of Greeblies" SofaKing, I am going down a different path with the detail work next to the Star Wars poster. So enjoy these tid bits of progress, and stay tuned for more . . .

Happy Monday RPF'ers. A rather lame statement because for most of us Monday is the end of a weekend of constructing, creating, and enjoying the craft. But it also tends to be a day of sharing the work, and sharing it helps us get through the day job right? So without further delay, lets share some work . . .

I had a chance to get a huge amount of work done this past weekend in large thanks to my father, the master, @junkyardjedi. He came up and we cranked out one of the more daunting portions of the room, and that is the main display cabinet. Now I still have a good chunk of work to do on this, but I think the difficult part is the initial assembly. So now we will be on to sanding, sealing, and painting. Granted, i will need to get that done soon, as there is absolutely zero room to move around in the shop! LOL

Thanks Marvin, yeah, this part of the build is pretty massive. I'm glad its being built in several parts, or it would be a nightmare to move.

Hi Everyone, I've been away for a tad. Travel for pleasure, travel for work, and then BOOM it was the Holidays!

So here are a couple very minor progress shots on the room . . .

Now, this has been limited work, i realize that. But if you will all indulge me a tiny bit, I would like to get only sort of off track here. It is the holidays, and I have been doing a little work on a project for my nephew. The reason I am putting it here instead of a new build thread is that I am also using this little project as a "test" for how I am going to program and wire the LED's on my many display units in the room. That, and I thought this was sort of cool and I wanted to share it will all of you ;)

The design below as I said is for my nephew. He is 3 years old, and loves buttons, switches, and anything with lighting and sound. So this unit has all of that. The below images are not complete, as I still need to complete the lighting and control along with the speakers and sounds. I am using an Arduino Uno with an MP3 shield, and a small amp for the speakers. Very similar to the setup in my Astromech.

this is where it is so far.

I completely underestimated how long it would take to solder all these LED's and get them ready. I will absolutely be re-thinking how this is done for the room panels. A few here or there is fine, but for an entire panel I need a faster simpler way to handle this.

Now, you have come this far so can I ask you to join me just a bit further? I also have a project that is not entirely part of this build, but I am building this next part as part of the room and the displays.

I have always been fascinated by the simple design of the "Scanner Crates" that the scanning crew used on the Falcon in A New Hope. I want to have storage bins of varying sizes in the room for props and other collectables. But I don't want just normal rubbermaid totes and bins, I want to be able to leave them out and about and have them add to the decor. So for a test I made a small "Scanner Crate" to fit my custom DL-44 Blaster. I think this crate will also double as a weapon stand for this blaster.

I was asked by a friend of mine if I would make him one for his Blaster, and his brother wants one for his light saber. So Once I perfect the building and casting process I will certainly throw them up on my website if anyone's interested.

But here we go, check it out. I would love your feedback on the design.

Wow, just overwhelming the quality you put into this. Always impressed. I like the display idea very much.

The work on this is mind blowing. That panel for your nephew is great... what an awesome gift!

Thank you, I am glad to hear that. I am really wanting to give him something that he will enjoy. He loves Star Wars already, and I know I would have gotten a kick out of it as a kid.

Everything about this just look great! I love the panel for your nephew, not to mention the scanner crate.

If you need a quicker method of installing lots of LEDs, how about fairy lights? It’s coming up to Christmas do you should be able to get them just about anywhere, and it would save on having to wire up each LED individually (provided that you only need them to light up all together.) You can even get remote control versions which could work well.

Anyways, just a thought. I used them on my TARDIS console and they do the job with a lot less trouble.

Whatever you decide to do, I know this is gonna turn out awesome either way!
