Tie Fighter with Coolshade

OK yes another one with coolshade.

Got this a few months ago and 100% its a nice-n but not sure what version. Im not an expert but a few things im not sure about is the size of the armature. This one is 28.5mm but I also had a armature that I was told is for the nice-n new kits but it is 31.8mm and would never fit this kit.

The lengths are the same and that also has me worried as they seem to be a bit short but more on that later as I have not received the plastruct yet to build the wings and will probably be using Jason's Moffeaton guide as that is a real help.

Some pics below of the armatures.

Re: Tie Fighter

Here is a pick of the kit part against the EFX tie. As you can see maybe the EFX is not so screen accurate but it is very clean and symmetrical and just on another level as in how thin parts can be compared to garage kits.

But no real coolshade and that's what I want. Well I did before I started haha

Re: Tie Fighter

its been a long time since I built this kit, but I am now in the process of building hero stars I got from Steve about 4 years ago now. I have the resin armature, but if I remember correctly even the machined armatures required "shimming". I am sure there is at least one thread discussing it. Good luck with the build, its a great kit and Eatons build of the hero stars had been a great help. I,m hoping to cut some koolshade this weekend:cool , but I'll probably chicken out.....

Not sure where you mean it needed shimming. The tie ball etc fits perfect to the armature but as shown below I only have about 17mm for the wings to bolt on and that's not much. Not sure how everyone else has bolted there's on or maybe glued on ?

Re: Tie Fighter

Sorry, there were these TWO problems as I recall. Some folks did have to shim to get the fuselage to sit right in the mount. From the looks of it, you are going to have very little, still too much, after you finish your wingstars. I would finish the Stars and then see if the "cover" could be hogged out to fit what is sticking out, if you don't feel confident just cutting it down. My Hero wingstars are nearly perfect on my resin mount but were just a tad too short for my resin ones.

Looking at another post of a TIE build, it appears the builder moved the wingstar mounts out closer to the end of the armature, not accurate but it worked.

Re: Tie Fighter

I thought it would be easier to work on this without the armature so i made it removable for now so i could work on the seems and parts etc with out the armature. Had to counter sink the screws tho on the armature.

Haze grey is on the body. I thought this paint was **** out of the can so shot it on with my airbrush and still **** but not thick and blotchy.

Re: Tie Fighter

Need help

OK I have not glued this just had it clamped together.

Now I know people have mentioned using like a 1mm card in between the coolshade but there is no room for any thickness what so ever as you will see I have shown the coolshade to be 1.72mm. this will give approx 3.44mm so was very difficult to fit into the H beam that has a gap of 3.35mm.

This is why I used thin paper so it would fit. How has everyone else fit the coolshade into the H beam using a thicker card in-between the coolshade.

I'm about to get the latest Nice-N TIE started with Koolshade wings. Thanks for blazing the trail, and FWIW I'll keep you posted on how the wings turn out.
