I am working on a Hannibal Chau costume for GenCon next year and am having trouble finding a source for the fabric for his vest.

as you can see it appears to be some sort of textured wave striped pattern. I have looked at every fabric and craft store within 50 miles of me and none of them carries anything even remotely close. if anyone knows of a source for a fabric at least somewhat similar to this please let me know.

I did a commission on the Jacket and Vest earlier in the year. Found a Jacket fabric that was pretty much spot on after a dye bath. Vest I wasn't so lucky on... Love to find a better than I used fabric though.

Did you use spoonflower for the jacket fabric?
what kind of fabric did you go with for the vest?
how did the dye bath work out?

I did not use Spoonflower. The vest was randomly sourced fabric with a wavy pattern in it. Doubt I could find it again, and it wasn't all that close to begin with. So it's really not worth it.

The Jacket fabric I got here: http://www.oriental-cheongsam.com/double-fish-high-density-rayon-brocade-p-1440.html
It's very narrow, so you need about 6 yards to get a jacket out of it. It's pretty dead on minus the color. The red is too red and the embroidery is green. I fixed this with a double dye treatment. Once with black poly iDye to take down the red, and once with black RIT to black out the embroidery.

I wish I could find some pics of the jacket...

Silk moire! You're looking for silk moire.

They also make printed versions of this, but it doesn't look as nice. It's a little hard to photograph because the watermark nature of the fabric has it look different in all kinds of light/angles. Beautiful stuff, though!

I have had pretty good luck buying fabric from Amazon in the past.

Oh man this post is several years old. I literally just joined because I knew what kind of fabric that was and got excited. >.<

Thread of the dead resurrection!

Speaking as a textile expert, this is NOT silk Moire. It's a specialty weave. Nice conclusion though. That's the first thing I thought of as well. The fabric in the links you posted doesn't even look remotely similar tbh...
