So, from the moment I saw it in the trailer, I loved it. It's creepy and cool, and with Spader's voice behind it becomes terrifying ! Now, we saw a prop at SDCC that looks a lot like it, and this is the kind of display I'm going for :
But I'm trying to keep it more accurate to the trailer version, and there are quite a few differences between the two :
The chest piece I freehanded from foam, then coated with Smooth On 65D and putty. Still need putty and sanding, although since that thing is busted, a few imperfections are actually welcome here. (have yet to take a pic of it at this current stage)
The arm and inner chest I plan on building from aluminum tubings and scraps mostly, as well as a few 3D printed parts I have yet to design.
What most on my time was spent on are those :
Modeled from the trailer in Blender. Took me quite a while, and there are definitely a few inaccuracies but without more reference, I'm going to settle down for what I made.
I still have to model parts for the inside of the head, but once again the references are pretty much lacking, aside from that poor drone's head Ultron squashed in the trailer. I did grab a few things from it though, but I'm gonna have to take a few artistic liberties as I did for the inside of the hand. Speaking of which, I designed the hand to be articulated, so each finger can be bend, as well as the wrist, which allows me to position it like the SDCC prop or play a little bit with it, like putting on top of another drone's head or something. Yes, since Ultron is a zombified drone, I started by modeling an undamaged drone then destroyed a copy, so I still have the regular drone head.
All of this is going to be 3D printed on my Form1+ printer, at 50 micron of resolution. This is what it looks like out of the printer (just removed the supports)
It's pretty clean already as you can see (the layers are somewhat visible, but it's smooth to the touch), but I'm sanding them anyway and I'll have to use a bit of filler here and there to make sure the pieces match since I had to slice the faceplate and the rest of the head in several smaller parts. The fourth part of the faceplate is printing as we speak and will be done tomorrow morning, so hopefully I'll have the faceplate assembled and part of the hand by the end of the weekend.
I print almost 24/7, but SLA technology, while having a pretty good surface finish, is rather slow, so I won't expect to have everything printed until next weekend, if I don't have failed print that is.
Now, about the electronics, nothing fancy is going to go in this asides from some blue led inside the head and in the chest. I thought about a few servos to make the head turn randomly, but I don't feel like learning how to use and arduino board just for this so it's gonna stay leds only for now.
