YT-2000 Series Scratch Build

Hello All!

This one started life 3 -4 years ago when I decided I wanted to build my first scratch model. I have always loved this ship, and aside from Stefan Hacker's amazing build, I have seen none. The plan was to make the top and then mold it so I could slush cast a bottom, but having less experience then, I shelved the project after there wasn't enough silicone to make the mold as deep as I wanted and the casts bulged. Fast forward three-four years and I had learned how to make a rigid mother mold after casting resin copies for parts of my full size Iron Man suit, and I decided to go back. I still had some issues, but was able to pull a good cast of the hull to make the bottom part. The drawback is that I could not slush cast it,...so it's solid resin on the bottom and quite heavy. Moreover, I drilled in aluminum brackets to join the frames and have a brass rod securing the center as well so it's stout to say the least. Additionally, I cast some greeblies from vintage kits and used a AMT Falcon cockpit as the base for the cockpit, then extended it, molded it, and slush cast it with small brass rods as reinforcement. I decided to take some creative license with the design and made some modifications by extending the engine block and adding a slant to the front mandibles. I would love to get your thoughts! Enjoy!

Thanks! I'm actually going to remove a few. Now that there is some base coat, I think I could stand to dial it down a greeblie or two. Also going to smooth some imperfections a bit. We'll see how it looks.

NO! Don't do it! She looks fantastic as is. Please just don't remove any of the greeblies.

More progress. Went with a similar weathering to ILM style as if this were a physical model. That said, I'm on the fence about dialing it down.

Very cool! I've wanted to do this ship since the X-Wing Alliance game. That's pretty optimistic for your first scratchbuild! I started with something small that I knew there was no way I could screw it up. :lol

Thanks guys! I'm loving the satisfaction that comes from scratch building. I'm on the fence as to the next one. Either a 20" concept slave one, a 1/32 TFA resistance transport, a 36" Rots blockade runner, or a studio scale ESB background ship.

Thanks! It was a combo of a few:

- Mig rust pigment with a tamiya flat base and thinner
- A custom mix of Tamiya medium gray and yellow with some brown thinned out

I usually start with my "Star Wars Base white" which is 7 parts tamiya flat white, a drop of medium gray, half part deck tan and a drop of buff. Not quite a "Reefer White" but works with most scales.

I spray it over the black semi gloss base coat and go heavier in areas where I want it to be really light, then I add accents of sky grey, medium gray, and buff, each with a dash of base color to tone it down (heavily thinned). The darker streaks are an equal parts mix of grey, brown, and black. Then I airbrush the rusty brown and "streak" it with a 0000 brush dipped in a small amount of thinner. Then I go back and add highlights in the base color (paint chips and panel accents) with a small firm brush to lend the feeling that the layer of grime or paint got rubbed off in places.

Simply put, my layers go:
-Primer
-Semi-gloss black
-base colors
- low lights / dirt
- dullcote laquer
- weathering wash in some panel lines
- airbrush some base color in some panels lightly
- walk away all angry and confused, doubting abilities etc.
- come back and add chips with stiff brush
- accent streaking

If I'm feeling like it is too "blingy" or dark and I want to give it the look like it has been in the archives for a while, I will dust it with very thinned base color with buff added at high pressure from about 2 feet away using a Badger 155 airbrush. I pretty much only use that for base coats and "dusting" since it's about one step above a paint gun as far as accuracy goes.

I realize there are probably a 100 ways to skin this cat, but I'm trying to plot my method out now. Your explanation makes a lot of sense. I wasn't quite sure if I wanted to do the black pre-shading at first, but now I believe this is the way to go. That and your approach of multiple subtle layers.

I'm going more for a realistic scaled feel rather than the exact scale model paint job.
