Your favorite foreign movies

I've just recently started watching foreign films, mainly horror, and I am starting to catch on to some good flicks. I primarily watch U.S. movies, but the other night I watched The Devil's Backbone, a Spanish movie, and thought it was excellent.

Do you watch foreign films, and, if so, what are some of your favorites? Do you stick with a primary genre or watch whatever looks good? If you do watch foreign movies, do you watch horror flicks and, if so, what are some good ones?

I mainly watched Hammer films, Bond films, some Japanese films. Parasite Eve was pretty good but still not accurate to the novel from what i've heard.

You have to remember that the RPF has members from all over the world, so what may be 'foreign' to you, may not be to them.

That aside, I'm a massive fan of Akira Kurosawa and his Samurai epics, with Seven Samurai and Yojimbo being some of my favourite films.
I do tend to stick to a particular genre or theme, Samurais in this case, as I have an active interest in that particular topic. But that's not to say I don't watch many other genres...as the Japanese are masters at horror.

I'm also a huge fan of HK martial arts films as I like a lot of action.

The bottom line is, I don't treat these films as 'foreign', I treat them as I would any film. I've watched and liked films from all over the world.

I do understand that and appreciate all takes from any country.

I also watched Ip Man for the first time. GREAT movie.

"Rec." a spanish horror film is very nice ! (I think that there was a US remake of it).

Also, in the humorist spy kind I recommend you "OSS 117, Nest of Spies" and "OSS 117, Lost in Rio" ... French movies..

And of course, the Ninth Gate, thriller/supernatural kind ... A French/Spanish movie made by Polansky with Johnny Depp !

Yes, saw Rec. too, good one. The American version is Quarantine.

I've been getting into a lot of eastern eye films lately. Ones in my collection that I can repeatedly watch are:

The Infernal Affairs Series
Casshern
A Bittersweet Life
Deathnote (live action version, absolutely loved them)

I love the British cold war spy movies like Michael Caine's Harry Palmer movies, the Satan Bug and a few others.

Non-American films actually form the bulk of my top five faves:
1. Seven Saumrai
2. Let the Right One In
3. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

In addition, virtually anything by Kurosawa makes my list. Though nowhere near favorties, I'd put these next ones in my top 50 anyway: I'm fond of Run Lola Run, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Akira, and Waking Ned Devine. For horror I enjoyed High Tension (well, enjoyed might be a bit much. It was pretty messed up). House of Flying Daggers had some merit. Was Trainspotting a non-American studio? I had to watch it with subtitles, so it counts in my book :lol

Burnt by the Sun

Shogun's Samurai (a.k.a. Yagyu Clan Conspiracy)

Como Agua para Chocolate

Battle Royale

Der Baader-Meinhoff Komplex

The Battle of Algiers

Z

Red Cliffs

The Kurosawa jitai geki

Heaven & Earth (Ten to Chi to) (not the Tommy Lee Jones one, the one about 4th Kawanakajima)

If you're getting into the Japanese horror:

The Eye (the original is fantastic...the remake I haven't even bothered to watch...)
Audition (I don't even know what to tell you...disturbing, but awesome)

Seven Samurai is astounding. I'll agree that most Korusawa films are worth a look - Stray Dog, Red Beard, Yojimbo, High and Low, the list for that guy goes on and on.
