Yoda from Target..

Today at Target, I found (while searching among the MAJORLY discounted christmas junk for LED lights) a christmas stocking with Yoda's head at the top... it looks pretty close to full scale (to my eyes anyway, although it may be too small)

I removed the head from the stocking and I'm planning on building up a body (probably at a much later date since I already have like a million side projects)

I wrapped him with my jedi robe to take some other pics (to get a feel for how it could look when finished.)

Best thing about this???

it cost me $3.75

It looks about 80% to scale but the sculpt is pretty darn good. I would still make a body for it since it looks better than most of the 1:1 scale versions!

Good Snag!

Yeah, I'm planning to :D
Before I make the body for this one I'm planning to make my own sixth scale yoda and this head will provide me with great reference... now I just have to find out if my sculpting abilities are any good :p I've not done it since high school.

hm... 80%.

I always figured Yoda's height at around 2'.
What exactly was his height anyway? (I need to figure out height for whatever sort of armature I might end up building).
I have a Yoda Lightsaber.. I'll probably make him able to hold it (even if he is a little smaller then he should be).

Cool project and a nice find -- although I'd have to say the scale on this piece looks closer to .50. Looks a bit like Yoda's son. :)

Thanks, Pilot. :thumbsup

(scratches head...)

hm.. I guess you're right.

I'm still gonna make him a body though.
Might have to scratch-build an in scale saber.

(pretends there is still hope)
Mark Hamill is 5' 9"

Richard Wells (me) is 6' 1"

meh.. I guess I have to just accept that he's smaller than he should be and make the body to match. It will mean using less fabric on his clothes anyway ;).

As far as the size, it does look a little small. IMO 50% seems too small, but 80% seems too large; 65% maybe? :D

I saw the original Yoda puppet at the Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination exhibit here in Los Angeles earlier this year, and I was a little surprised at how small it is--I'm guessing maybe 18-20" tall--but the head, hands, and feet seemed a bit large for the figure. After all, the head had to be large enough for Frank Oz's hand, a fiberglass skull, and the mechanisms that operated the eyes, eyelids, eyebrows, etc., but if they hadn't made the exposed hands and feet in a matching scale the head would have appeared disproportionate.

Judging by the expression on Yoda's face, I'd say the sculpt is based on the PT version and, for such an inexpensive item, it's one of the best I've seen. I might just have to pay a visit to our local Target to see if I can find one.

:lol That's the spirit!

Seriously, I do think it's a good find, and if you display the finished piece cleverly, you won't notice so much that's a bit undersized.

"Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmph. And well you should not. For my ally is cost-effectiveness, and a powerful ally it is!"

It's the adventures of.. YODA JUNIOR!!!!!
Fifty percent smaller you think he is? Your ass he will kick!!! :lol

Smaller package... Bigger Force!

:D I could live with 65%.... To me it looks about like Yoda did in the Comic book adaptation for ESB (sizewise that is, the face reminds me of him in the Dooku fight in AOTC).
I'll probably scratchbuild his saber but I am tossing around the .45 MR saber as an idea. I have the Correct Lamborghini rims at about .65 to the actual prop replica.

(great pics and discussion BTW)

I forgot to add earlier that the stocking has a little voice box built in and when you press its button, he says a few things. I'm planning to include it in the body when I build it ;)

The sculpt looks excactly the same as one the 18" Disney 'star tours' Yodas - those pop up on eBay quite regularly:

So, it's something like 65% size...a full size Yoda stands around 26".

(as I'm still VERY new to building up puppets or what have you)

I'm interested in learning HOW to make new eyes.

Got a link to any tutorials?

(or did you just mean give them a good re-paint :p)

He does look a bit small, but Yoda changed throughout the various movies. Especially from the first (4th) movie to the others. (So did his voice!) So exactly how small he is may depend on which movie you're referencing.

Honestly - from ANY movie standpoint this particular replica is WAAAY too small to be anywhere close to accurate.

But it looks like a good base for a scaled replica.

Not to knock the find or the potential for a decent display piece - I just don't want anyone to be under the illusion that is anywhere near to accurate scale. It isn't by a long shot.
