Yet another Star-Lord build

Obviously Star-lord builds are popular right now due to the movie just being released, hopefully my build is still somewhat interesting :)

This is my third time creating a costume for cosplaying and my very first time creating a helmet and using foam. My previous two costumes were much simpler, Finn from adventure time and a pokemon trainer, mostly easy pieces of clothing and minimal custom piece with random items bought here and there.

For this build I started with the infinity orb. I used a styrofoam ball I found at Michaels and drew on a pattern to get the feel of the original, then used a soldering iron to melt away the pattern.

In between some stages of the orb I started on the helmet, something I was very nervous about since it will make or break the cosplay and I have never created a helmet or used foam before. So far I'm really happy with how its shaping up. I'm starting to apply layers of watered down wood glue now to try and seal plus fill in some gaps. Is it reasonable to apply bondo after this process to get a better finish in the "creases" to get a cleaner look? I also thought of adding fiberglass resin to the mask after applying a couple layers of the glue to add strength? Any help with cleaning up a foam piece is greatly appreciated, I've seen lots of different methods mentioned on the forum. Many thanks to JFcustom for the foam Pepakura file.

I'll be updating the album as I make progress! I've ordered the toy quad blasters that others have posted, those will be painted and maybe have some extra bits added on.

Welcome to the Star Lord League. Hope it work out :) it can be a chalenge to make a costume. I wouldnt use Bondo on foam, bondo has a 2 part mix, once the the 2 parts are mixed they heat up to harden and would deform plastic and foam during that process.

Couple of updates.

I think I'm finished with the infinity orb prop which was the easiest piece.

Then some updates on the mask, I added enough detail to a point where I felt ok giving it a first coat of primer.

I started to work on the "air canisters" for the front but then after taking apart the blaster nerf gun I found what I thought was a better piece for them!

IMG_4821.JPGIMG_4827.JPGIMG_4828.JPG

Now I just need to sand down rough spots, some might be a little challenging :/

IMG_4835.JPGIMG_4834.JPGIMG_4833.JPGIMG_4832.JPGIMG_4831.JPGIMG_4836.JPG

I put maybe 6-10 layers of wood glue over the phone before spraying, noticing a lot of bad areas of high glue. Hoping it doesn't take to much sanding to get things looking ok. I also picked up some plasti dip. My thought was to prime, clean up rough areas, then repeat till satisfied, paint the helmet its final colors, then coat with plasti dip?

As I mentioned I got the nerf blasters, right now I'm thinking of two options, either find a toy blaster from a dollar store or other cheap method and use the sound + lights it might have and put them into the blasters, or use some sort of arduino based solution? I have no experience with Arduino but maybe I could find a pre made kit or something.

Another update for the end of the weekend.

After my first primer spray I sanded spots down I wasn't happy with and then found this tube of countour putty in my hobby box. It turned out to work really well! It was easy to sand and easy to apply!

I took to fixing parts I was most concerned with, then added another layer of primer. Most of the spots went away but theres still some left. I decided to forgo sanding again and applied the first layer of plasti-dip

Sometime this week I'll do another coat of plasti-dip then if it looks good start painting.

Still working on the oxygen pipes, deciding on how to get the red eyes, and how I want to proceed with the blasters :)

Been a little busy with IRL stuff but heres an update!

Got the oxygen tanks (or whatever they are!) ready and attached them to the helmet.

Then while I was at home for the holiday weekend I picked up some spray paint.

Also while I was home I picked up two toy guns that had light and sound, not exactly the same blaster sound from the movie but still fun enough that it will add a nice touch.

And finishing out the weekend I found some foam I had from some old packaging and thought it would be nice to create a snug fit for the helmet.

IMG_4891.JPGIMG_4890.JPGIMG_4892.JPG

I still have no idea what to use for the red eyes, I also wear glasses so my vision will be diminished already by not having them on with the helmet. Some more paint, adding the 3 'tubes' on each side and some touchup and I'll be close to finished!

Idea... Get a super cheap pair of prescription glasses online. Take the arms of them off and then secure them inside the mask. Just might work

Well its been awhile, I'm now a married man!

Anyway, here's some progress, overall the helmet is done and I'm moving on to other things.

I ended up ordering a cheap pair of glasses from zenni optical with "pink" tint, but it looks close enough to red for me

This is pretty much the finished product

I also started on the belt buckle, decided to go simple and just make it out of clay then glue it to a belt.

I'm really lagging behind on the guns, mainly due to the fact that I'm in an apartment and have nowhere to spray paint and work with bondo, so that time is spent at a friends. Also still holding out on the jacket, ideally I would like to find a red leather jacket from a thrift store or cheap alternative online, since I'm not going for super movie authentic.
