Y Wing Comparison

Detail wise..I would GUESS the FM.

However, as far as SHAPE? I would defer to my Ywing Expertise brotheren, SN, Monsier, DARKSIDE et al, for that answer.

The difference is big, but actually not that big, because the nose of the head section is a seperate piece in the FM kit so the length shown here is maybe 4mm too short.

The greater width of the canopy in the Argonauts kit looks more accurate. The basic shape of the head section looks pretty good from the top, but it is too flat I think. Both top and bottom surface are too flat, not convex enough. The sidewalls are too narrow and at least with the gold Ys, the side walls should be almost the same height from front to rear.

Another example of a licensee having to obey arbitrary diktats on scale and accuracy? It's weird, though. Even the official site gives a reasonably sensible figure for the "real" ship. So is the FM underscale or the Argo overscale?

As far as I know, the Y-Wing is supposedly 16 m long. So a 1/72 Y should be 222.222222222.... mm long. The FM kit measures pretty exactly 230 mm without guns and 235 mm with guns. Multiplied by 72 makes the "real" Y 16.9 m long. So I´d say both kits are oversized.

Darth,

btw,
Not sure what you mean. Each part, is the same part for each respective kit.

I thought the difference a bit more pronounced. Not that it matters...its all in fun.

Anyhow, if I can find an MPC, Ill post a 3 way comparison. That should stir up some conversation!
;-)

What I meant was that the head section of the FM kit is made up of more parts than the Argo kit. There´s the top half part including the side walls, the bottom piece and a SEPERATE NOSE PIECE. You glue together the top and bottom halves, and then attach the nose piece to the front. This piece is not shown in your pics, it´s the section between the front end and the most forward panel line, and makes up about 5mm of the head section. Your pics just compare a part of the head section of the FM kit to the whole cockpit pod of the Argo kit. Have a look at the instructions and you´ll see what I mean.

All in fun? Hope I didn´t come over too serious in some way, actually I see this as a totally neutral discussion. :confused

I do also have the old mpc "kit" (toy) and it´s smaller than the FM kit.

TWO threads, in TWO different forums, about the same thing?

On bit of a power trip, Frank?

BTW: This is the STUDIO SCALE forum, mack. Neither of those models is SS. You know the rules.

You had better watch your step, pal. You are gonna earn yourself an infraction point.

Then you can join your buddy, Guy Raz in BANSVILLE.

Yah. Deal with THAT.

:lol

Actually, Stevie-baby, if you READ the first post of THIS thread, it was a FAILED attempt at redirecting the at the time anemic discussion on the OTHER thread in GENERAL MODEL BUILDING.

I cant help that no one else realized that, and admittedly, I did nothing to stop it by continuing to post here.

You know me, if there is a pot full of compost someplace, Im always there to stir it.
