X-Wing Research: Differences Between the Hero and Pyro Models

:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm :lol

Simon's sarcasm was directed at you, not with you, I'm afraid. It's a shot from the shooting for Star Wars. Plain and simple, as already stated: Muren's got hair, that tells you everything you need to know. :lol

Again, no offence. Your bounce back attitude - while initially annoying - does you credit. :D

Muren lost his hair between 1976 and 1979?!! It must have been pretty stressful working for Lucas.

Was there a caption that went along with the Muren picture in its publication that stated it was during ANH?

Certainly you can count to 3, no?

Repeat after me: one stripe, two stripes, three stripes. Aaaaaand, stop.

Are you saying the only characteristic you are going by is three stripes? You do know that both hero and pyro Red 3 have three red stripes? I'm looking at the paint and weathering patterns, and the wing spread to try to determine if I'm looking at at Red 3 hero or Red 3 pyro.

The paintwork on pyro red 3 was completely different in every way except the stripes. It in no way resembles the hero model.

Edit: I type too slow....

And to my knowledge, was never shot for the final cut of the movie, thats all Hero baby, ALL of it :confused.
So anyway, what were we talking about, i forget, how about this weather, pretty mild for the time of year huh?

Thanks Jedimaster, yeah, I know. It was mentioned recently in the thread, so I neglected to mention it again. It should make the two birds stand out from each other pretty starkly. The first and fourth sets of screen caps (thanks for providing those...ummmm...dot-dash guy?) have a halfway decent shot of the belly of Red 3, but it doesn't match up to the Red 3 hero bottom pic, and we don't have a bottom shot of Red 3 pyro to compare. And the 2nd and 3rd set of screen caps have too much motion blur for me to make anything recognizable out. But the spread on the wings and engines looks narrower than the 1st and 4th caps, which suggests a Red 3 hero model. Anybody else catching any hero details?

Muren looks very different in the behind the scenes pics for ESB, and if you're attempting to argue otherwise, then the weight of providing photographic evidence falls on you.

:facepalm

It's source couldn't be more clearly labeled on the second version of the screen cap I posted several times. That pic of Muren comes from the ANH miniature effects chapter of Lorne Peterson's DVD interview, which came with his Sculpting a Galaxy book. It's one of a lengthy sequence of pics from the production of ANH.

Those were the details that would have been helpful to include, but you only had the pic up which gave limited information by itself. My memory of Muren is with glasses and gray long hair that is thinning on top (kind of like Ben Franklin), but I had no idea how early he started to look that way. You just assumed everyone would know what Muren looked like during each year of his life....and your mother told you what happens when you assume.

Actually, no. My mother told me to never feed the trolls...

Simon, im pondering whether to use an open face mold, or go balls out and make a two part, its boggling.

As for Troll's, its all subtitled, and the dubbing is awful, not a bad movie, different is the word id choose.

Sure we do!

He meant the royal "we", J., as in Prince Trollee Von Trollington.

I could be wrong but I think his name is Chris, and this isn't the first time we've seen him around these parts.

Anyway, thanks for posting that so that I didn't have to!

I learned long ago that there are some members on the RPF that know enough about a certain subject that their word is bond. Like you and X-wings, Beaz.

Like me and bacon.

I don't know Blue 5, but if he's sincere in his earnest musings, good for him. I like that kind of drive and passion... but to get contrary about stuff that EVERYONE formed a consensus on years ago, backed with hard-earned photographic proof, and countless threads just strikes me as odd. Especially when we're all so willing to reiterate it all again.

And again.

Annnnnd again.

Grrr! Bloody Stonecutters! :lol

Clearly not it. If anything the underside in the frame grabs looks more similar to Red 6's somehow than to Red 3 Pyro. Again, that's because they were probably painted at the same time...

As Stephen Colbert would say....then I accept your apology.

Thanks...ummmm...(copy & paste) -... . .- --.. for posting the screen grabs. I've only been looking at the shots on YouTube the last few days, so that was helpful. Two of those scenes are a good shot of the bottom of Red 3 and I've been comparing it to the Red 3 hero bottom pic:

anh-red-3-still-009.jpg
anh-red-3-still-005.jpg
Red3.jpg

And I've looked and looked for any matching weathering, but I've got nothing that seems to match. The only pics of Red 3 pyro that I have are the top from the table of models footage, so I can't match it to the pyro. But looking at the wing spread between upper and lower, and the engines look to be fairly close to the fuselage, this does look like it might be our only image of the bottom of Red 3 pyro (assuming there wasn't yet a 3rd Red 3 built).

The other two screen grab shots:
anh-red-3-still-017.jpg
anh-red-3-still-021.jpg
kg-lucasfilm_archived-red3-reference-025.jpg

These are tougher to see the details due to the motion blurring (yup that second one was on my lunchbox). I've looked at the side stripe for the breaks in the stripe from the weathering, I can't see them which may be just due to the low-res and blur. The wing spread is definitely not as flared as the previous pics, and the engines look like they have more spacing between them and the fuselage. So the physical dimensions look like a good match to Red 3 hero to my eye.

Barring any better shots of Red 3 found in the film, I'd say those two scenes and what I'll call the Sculpting the Galaxy Muren & Red 3 photo and caption are fairy good evidence that Red 3 hero was born prior to 1977. That likely means that the shots of Red 3 hero from the top, bottom and rear are from that period as well. I don't remember who it was, but someone had stated that they believed Red 3 was the last of the heros to be built. That seems as reasonable an explanation as any as to why it did not appear on the table full of models, having not been built yet.

In comparison, the "Blue 3 Biggs" pic seems to indicate that the Red 3 pyro was built early among the pyros with Red 4 and Red 12. I'm not sure about Red Leader pyro, and Red 6 is not finished being painted on the table so it was almost finished at that point.

Didn't I include the 4sides of Pyro 3 on the decal cd I had?

I figured that stuff is pretty easy to come by, now.
