My buddy purchased a Richie's Armor Xwing helmet that I offerered to assemble paint it for him.

So I did.

Oh yeah, I departed from the usual color scheme.

You've really given this a beautiful finish, and have "sold the heft" of a metal helmet, visually. Awesome.

Thanks for the kind words. I really love the whole weathered look of items. To me it specifically works better when you have an imperfect item like this. The vac-form was so-so and it took a bit of work to correct the warping. The lens was even canted. Threw it in boiling water, reshaped by twisting and dunked it in an ice bath to hold the form.

Honestly I thought this would be easier than putting together a GT Storrmtrooper helmet, but it wasn't. I also had to scratch build an internal slider track for the lens visor. Nothing came with the kit. Guess it wasn't offered.

Could have done more, but time was short. In the end I was pretty happy.

Ya, totally rad ! How about adding a few welding lines, like the Rocketeer helmet has on the next build up ? And regarding the weathering, I imagine that a little greenish corrosion might work here and there.

Good ideas, but no more of these for me. Too much trouble. I am inherently lazy. :lol Actually, it's about streamlining processes. There, that sounds better.

Wow... these really exsit? I had heard about the steam punk star wars concepts in another forum, but no one had pictures of them. How many more of these are there?

Awesome weathing there! How did you do that??

As for the 'imperfect item'...a lot of recent helmets are like that....mine was for sure and I know of a lot of other people who got the same 'standard'. :unsure

Actually, the helmet came frome the source. Not a recast.

As for the helmet paint job:

- Krylon red primer (because I like it)
- Base coat of rattle can gold paint. No particular brand - Had some duo-tone laying about
- Wet sanded
- Applied Alclad copper with airbrush
- Applied Alclad gold with airbrush mostly to cover sanded areas thinly
- Applied Alclad steel with airbrush
- Applied decals
- Weathered with thinned out water based acrylic black - applied with a sea sponge - let dry slightly
- Picked up excess black with damp sponge and reapplied - let dry fully
- Hit it with Krylon matte finish

It ended up looking a bit too dark after it was all done so to soften and lighten I used antique gold and copper Rub 'n Buff. Slowly applying with an old cut up tee shirt. Once I had it where I wanted it I lightly coated it again with matte acrylic. The different layers come through in person very well and look like metal.

Thanks,
John
