x-wing drawings?

i've finished up my 2d orthos, using some more "perspective tracing" over more of those red-3 images. compared to the FM version, for the most part all that really changed was locations of the scribing. the most noticable difference is the back end. not only was the FM model too short, but it was to narrrow across and also too shallow in height. none of the three dimensional changes were the same proportionally, so it couldnt have been any kind of scaling issue. i'm not sure what happened there. just to be safe, in the end i inserted some kit parts for the buttplate to make my final measurements for height and width.

from the side and rear, it just looks like its pregnant or something... :unsure but its what "fits" we'll see how it turns out and i get some renders of it at different angles.

ill post some cleaned up pics and wireframe orthos once i get the 3d version flushed out in max.

The image you've posted is probably fan created, using the FineMolds art. The image you remember had the same text, but the ship itself looked like the old Ertl model kit:

X wing 1 image by Agent239 on Photobucket

after going over both, and finding how completely incorrect the front/back views on the color image are. i think you're completely correct.

someone asked for these tracings, so i figured i'd go ahead and post them now.
i can provide cad files if you want, just toss me a PM, but here's some high res plots. these are scaled up to SS size, about 1/24

as i mentioned, the front/back views in the later drawing are just eye-wash, hardly any of it will match up in a true 5-view ortho.

and here are both overlaid. the red tones are the fine molds image, the blues are the color image tracing.

both are nicely done overall, but neither are very accurate, and would take a lot of manipulation to turn into an accurate 3d version.

I updated my blueprints, mostly small changes here and there. I'm going to try to replicate (hero) Red 1's paintjob; I was figuring out the base color for stripes/panels/decals recently. However, my image reference for the underside is quite poor (I guess there aren't any clear photos of it? these are all I could find), so I'd like to ask about your opinion on few areas:
There were definitely some darker panels on the aft part of the bottom side [1]. On pyro, the color of the panels seems to be blue (plus some scorchmark on the starboard side?), like the stripes on saturn cans. Were they blue on the hero too?
There's a horizontal black line just in front of the bottom mountcover [3]. Is this the continuation of the black spot on the port edge/side, or just the shadow cast by the mountcover? Doesn't look much like shadow, but it wasn't replicated on the pyro, which has quite accurately copied the hero in other aspects, so I wonder.
Stripes on the saturn can [4] - they look like the yellow stripe on the cans from hero's upper wings, maybe they were on the hero's lower cans too?

i'm trying to finish these up so i can finally put all my new parts together and finish the 3d model, but something about this newest version just looks "wonky"

does this look right? basically its the armature. my best fit always puts it a tad more than 1/8" above the centerline, and while at first glance it goes some way to explaining the hero/pyro difference in the wing spread, it just doesnt seem right to my eye?

the wings shown here are only 5mm blocks for reference, the fuz profile is my best estimate to date, using a 1" pipe for the arm. any thoughts?

I've seen your work and you've done a fine job. In fact, If I did know better, I'd thing that you were Ron Caudillo..

ty for the compliment. I havnt talked to Ron in a couple years now, we used to bounce ideas off each other a lot back when i was still designing cardstock models. i've always admired his work too!

Moska, 16 degrees on the wing angle looks good. I set my V3 wings to 15, and I can't say I miss the degree, but 16 looks good in your drawing. With some heroes, the gun barrels barely clear the top of the cans; I was aiming for something like that, I guess. 16 puts them a bit higher than that, which is what we have in Red 5, for instance.

OylPslyk. Nose looks good. To me, there is greater parity anyway between the hero Red 3 nose and pyro nose, than there is, say, between the V3 nose and any ILM nose.

nearly finished with the kitparts, only a few left. i can already tell the fuselage i made earlier this year will have to be scrapped, its way off on proportions. lining the rear view up with the buttplate its too small by at least 10% that thing drives me nuts...

i plan to use these drawings to model the 3d version, once that is finished i will use that model to make a complete set of final "blueprints" but untill then since i dont have any of these parts in-hand, and ive always only drawn/modeled this thing from photos; anyone care to print these out and compare to the real deals? at 100% on 8.5x11 they should print out full scale.

Wow! Thanks guys! Guess who recently joined the forum? Great to link up again! Thanks also for the compliments, I can only hope to be half as good as you guys and the rest of the talented people here.

Here is a link to my introduction:
Post #1800:
http://www.therpf.com/f9/new-members...2/index72.html

I'm hoping to be able to get some reference materials to develop paper models such as what I have shown in my introduction. These models are freely available for downloas, as you can see in my introduction.

Here are my current and future planned paper model design projects:
Babylon 5 Starfury (with detailed cockpit)
Hako-style Enterprise bridge (I need to finish the command section and view screen)
Lost in Space series (now working on the Jupiter 2- with detailed upper deck)
Doctor Who Dalek (2005 NSD)
Despicable Me car
Commodore computer series

And a LOT MORE ideas that I have (and am) gathering reference material and making drawings:
1980s 8-bit computer series (Atari, TI, Timex-Sinclair, Apple, etc.) <--NEED reference help PLEASE!)
Despicable Me jet
Oscar Meyer Weinermobile (with detailed interior)
Forbidden Planet C-157 D (with detailed interior)
USS Monitor (with detailed interior)
Other 'ideas' yet to be fleshed out (and I have a BUNCH of them!)

That's all great stuff. I'm still tinkering on my CG X-Wing, inching along as more material becomes available. I did try the 16 degrees of separation between the wings and I agree that it looks better than the commonly agreed uopn 15 degrees of separation. I'll post pics as things move along.

Stonky, i know i've seen your AT-AT, Tie Fighter, and your Lego Space threads over at sci-fi meshes. each one looks awesome, but i dont think ive ever seen your x-wing, i'll be eager to see the pics! i'm Anystar over there at that site.

and Ron, good to hear from you! i've been itching to do some more papermodels myself lately.

Great work! Thank you for posting. It is much appreciated.

Thank you, you're too kind. :)

Here are a couple of quick renders - I threw some quick color onto it just to give it some context. Still LOTS to do:

I'm preparing a Red 2 paper model and I'm trying to get the texture as close to the studio model as possible. This is how the wings look so far. Some areas are just a rough guesswork (bottom side of the right wing), but most of the specific scorchmarks, scratches etc. which I could identify should be there. Hopefully it could be useful as a painting reference, or as a texture for a CG model. Also, ideas for improvement are welcomed!

Haven't checked them to reference yet, so I can't comment on accuracy, but thanks for sharing this. What a great way to sort out what's going on with a studio model paint scheme!
