X-Men DOFP vs. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

So I was talking to my friends the other day and turns out they all hated TASM 2 and think DOFP is the best comic book movie someone has ever made. I strongly disagree. I really think eventhough it was good, DOFP had a TON of problems. They didn't explain how Xavier is still alive and in his own body or how Shadowcat got the amazing and totally different power of sending minds back to the past and, even if the Quicksilver scene was the best scene in the whole movie, how come Magneto had time between beign in Europe and in prison to had time to concieve Quicksilver. I really think it was something like "oh so Marvel wants to use OUR Quicksilver and we can do nothing about it? Well, we'll make the most lovable and amazing Quicksilver in this couple of scenes. How do you like that?"

TASM 2 on the other hand was, in my opinion, a very strong film. It was finally the Spider-Man I've always wanted to see: fun and lovable yet tragic and deeply sad sometimes. It was faithful to the comics and they killed off Gwen, a very bold move since we have not seen any important character dying on any other superhero movies, Avengers included. Had its flaws, like the incredible cartoonish and ridiculous interpretations of Kafka and Rhino but, to my opinion, it was the best Spider-Man movie yet: fun, deep and packed with action.

So that's my opinion, what do you guys think?

Seriously..? There are already threads about these films.

This X-Men flick was very superior to Spider-Man 2 - which was easily one of the worst comic book movies I've seen in recent history.

I have not seen a standoff between these movies, that's why I created it. You say that but why? Why is The Amazing Spider-Man 2 so bad? And "in recent history"? Man of Steel premiere was a year ago...

There's plenty of discussion about these movies. Why does one need a stand off? Capt. America The Winter Soldier blew either of these away.

Spider-Man 2 was the equivalent of Schumacher's Batman & Robin. You're right, I forgot about Man of Steel -- I guess these two are tied.

There are different levels upon which people evaluate, consume, and judge media and art. Your friends are using different criteria than you are, but since everybody's focused on the "worth" of the movie as either great or terrible, you're talking past each other. Some people tend to think that "I enjoyed it" means the same thing as "it was good" and then can't reconcile why someone else is miffed by a film they enjoyed.

Your issues with X-Men are surface level stuff--moments of "movie logic," whereas the problems people have with TASM2 are deep-tissue stuff---irreconcilable theme and character moments. Yet the surface stuff (fun action, things I recognize from the comics!) is working fine. Xmen functions well on a thematic level and has some surface issues, while TASM2 functions well on a surface level but has lots of thematic and character issues. This is where you are getting points of confusion.

Try reading this article, it starts off talking about spoilers, but later discusses the different levels of art appreciation that can result in hang-ups like these. What makes a movie "good enough" on one level isn't the same thing that makes it "good enough" on another level.

As a Spidey fan I enjoyed watching TASM2 and had a lot of fun in the theater, as it had a lot of great moments and good performances and beautiful design work. But as a consumer of media and as person who works in film and television, I don't think it's a very good movie. The longer I think about what they are saying with the story, the more issues I have with it.
I did not have as much fun in the theater watching X-Men: Days of Future Past, but I do think it's a much better film. It's more thematically coherent and has better things to say and explore, and it explores them fairly well.
As JD mentioned, an even better film is Captain America: The Winter Soldier. On pretty much all levels.

I can answer all 3, and Xaviers death was explained...On a side note, I can't believe you created a wasteful thread about these 2 movies when you could've just brought it to the post-release threads...Anyways...

1. Xavier transferred his mind into his brain dead twin brother right before Jean blew him up, its in the after-credtis sceen in x3. He even talks about his bro in further detail in earlier parts of the movie. Watch it again...

2. The only reason kitty had that 'power' was to pay homage to her going back in time in the conic, nothing more. She phased his mind threw the walls of time...Just stick to that.

3. Just because you didnt' see magneto bang Quick's mom in the movie, doesn't mean it didn't happen. Quicksilver was like 18...He could have met his mom in europe or something, youre just thinking too much.

Matter of opinions really, but I have to agree that DOFP was a much better film than ASM2. I don't think ASM2 was the worst thing to ever happen to Spidey fans - Batman & Robin comparisons unfair, and SM3 was worse than ASM2 (just barely). But DOFP as the greatest CBM to ever grace the earth? :lol Hell I wouldn't even give it best CBM of 2014, to me that still goes to Cap TWS.

I've outlined and linked to why I feel ASM 2 was on par with Batman & Robin in the appropriate thread. At times,I think B&R was superior to ASM 2 simply because B&R never attempted to be anything more than silly. Outside of the chemistry between Stone/Garfield (who I still feel is a poor Parker) and Spider-Man looking and acting like Spider-Man, I felt this movie was trash and worthy of being likened to Batman & Robin.

XM:DFOP had issues, but overall, I was able to overlook them because it was simply a better movie.
