Re: X Factor(y)

Which kit is that?

Assuming the finished on is a Studio Scale X-wing I am guessing that is the mid range 1/57 ish kit?

Re: X Factor(y)

Yep that's the 1/57 one

So that means it is basically the same scale as the smaller sound and play snap tite Force Awakens X-wings since they are 1/58 just in case anyone is looking for "scale-mates" to display it with.

The AMT/ERTL ties and tie interceptors are probably the closest size tie to go with it (they are around 1/51, but with the newer revised tie numbers, being a little larger actually isn't bad)

PHA, I am really liking the weathering and overall look of that large Xwing. What color did you use for the base? Nice job, sir!

Thanks Lee - pure white over a black primer base.

Virtually all the weathering was achieved with black pastel chalk. Though the engines and R2 strip deck (either side of the strip itself) bear some thinned Light Sea Grey washes. Engine nozzles were Jet Exhaust enhanced with more black pastel. More pronounced blast marks (like on the upper port wing) were Euro 1 Grey. And I tend to be rather heavy-handed with Testor's Clear Flat which can and a ever-so-slight honey-colored veneer.

That's the basic formula in a nutshell. This smaller kit will received the same treatment.

Re: X Factor(y)

The end result is really quite splendid. It literally made me stare and refocus as it looked like a full size ship at first glance. But I knew I was looking at a model, lol. When you say you used pastel chalks are you talking about the Tamiya weathering kind? I' am sorry if this is a silly question but I am new and building my first model (a Falcon of course) in 30+ years. =D

Re: X Factor(y)

I was wondering about how you did the weathering on that X-wing, too - thanks! It looks eerily like an ILM filming model.

Not that is the ultimate complimnet we all are looking for! So THANK YOU!! :cool

Here are the chalks I used, almost entirely black. Plus, a small bit more color on the ship.

Re: X Factor(y)

I am so happy to see the chalks you used as that looks to be the exact same set I have. I, of course, probably won't apply them with the same skill as yourself BUT I will try =D

crackerjazz hit the nail on the head I just didn't realize it. It looks like a movie prop. It's gotta be the best looking x-wing model I have seen yet.

Thank you for sharing, PH!

P.s.PH and CJ If you get a chance can you look at my questions in these threads and offer some advice on my latest issues? Blkess you if ya can..if ya can't well bless you anyway =P

Re: X Factor(y)

BTW and FYI - I realize there is a general sloppiness to the base paint job; sloppy elements that would not necessarily qualify as true weathering.

Some comments on this...

A primary cause of this is that I have reached a point in my modeling that my vision is no longer good enough to paint indoors. Even with eight double tube fluorescent ballasts, I do not have enough light and visual acuity to properly paint indoors. I can only really see what I am painting outside in sunlight. I could add additional task lighting to the shop, and may, but this still will likely not be enough.

Much of the slop will actually get cleaned up as I progress. For example some of the paint bleed on the cockpit surround has been taken care of.

And some of the slop - though not true weathering - will be masked or blended in by the actual weathering process.

Re: X Factor(y)

Nice work!

Also digging your Hasbro conversion in the background. Like to see more of that one too!

Re: X Factor(y)

Pretty much all painted, with only pastel powders to add...

Right on. How "clean" does the initial paint work really need to be if you're just going to chip it and scratch it and make it look dirty anyway? Besides, we don't know how good the Rebels were who painted it--maybe they suck at painting and thought, "Mehhh, that's good enough." :D

That being said, I see nothing wrong with your X-Wings and hope mine turn out half as good when I finally get around to them. And I agree with the comments about your Hasbro conversion looking like a filming model; stellar work! (y)thumbsup
