WWII shield tutorial...

Ive had several people PM me to put up a WWII shield tutorial. i can do that...
i make mine from a heavy guage steel (its scrap metal so it varies from size to size)
i used to line them out and cut them with a muther fracken hacksaw.. LOTS and LOTS of time and blades, you can also use a jig saw if you have it...
i make several a month so i just have them either water jet or plasma cut in stacks of 10, that way i get clean(er) edges.
any way i just realized i dont have my pics on fotobucket, so i will pause here (im at school) and i will pick this up tonight after i get home...
but remember that you can use whatever you can to make this... an old thick plastic trash can, wood, you can buy that plastic kydex and heat it up... also you can make it as big or small as you want it...

k so this is how i do them
get them cut at a local shop (check your plasma or water jet shops) you will need a basic cad file done...

i hand roll them (that is i put my knee in the center then lift up the sides, this is actually not to bad of a job if you dont have a roller...

then take scrap metal from the same job and make your strap mounts and handle, you can make any kind of handle you want... i like the big kind...

Then i sand it down, starting with heavy grit and/or a grinder sander. then get to the wet dry, i dont make it perfect, i leave it a little roughed up for paitning. i use a self etching primer... i like it and it works great!

this is a site for learning and doing and i am no means the expert on anything lol i try and make things easier for whoever wants it so that seems MUCH easier than having them cut! have at thee lol

I think the "Crusade" shields are a lighter gauge than the ones irish makes, so that would definitely affect price. Keep that in mind.

yes true , but where not doing battle with them ,they are hanging on the wall you know.

but his craftsmanship is great on these and i had the money i would just buy one.

Do you make your own stencils? I think doing the star would be the hardest part when it comes to painting.

not really , you could get vinyl plastic and run it through a printer. Just do a star in illustrator or something and print it right on to the sheet. then cut and stick.

i actually used to do the stencil and its a clean look, but i went for professional decals to make it all come together in the end.. but whatever you do to make it work... well... it works

Neat project!! I love the various WWII Cap projects.

BTW, your thread title, nor your entire first post, makes no reference to Captain America. I clicked it on a hunch, but you might get more traffic with a better title. :)

But, I really like the Curved look of the Metal work on the one made by irishamericanlad better!

hey my feet lol

thanks propsculptor, it was kind of a fluke how that design worked out, and when my roller broke i had to roll 18g steel on my knee lol.... well more bend than roll.
your shield looks great!
