Would adult animated films be popular today?

Just wondering if you guys would find interest in adult traditional animated films today?
Like Heavy Metal, American Pop, Rock n Rule, Wizards?

They weren't popular then so why would they be now? They were/are micro niche films with, now, small (at best) cult following(s). That said, if someone wants to take a risk and make one - why not?

I think heavy metal 2000 would have done better if they'd used it as somethng other than showing off julie strain's animated body. the soundtrack was way better. There had been speculation of a sequel to Wizards but it never happened. I'd like to see a good one made but it will never be a mainstream hit even though Wizards did well. Actually one might do well now because it would be something out of the ordinary.

A Scanner Darkly made 5.5 mil domestic in three short months. There won't be an adult animated film again in our lifetimes.

Direct to DVD I think would work well.

Though not adult...I think of the DC animated efforts lately and they are sucessful.

They're not strictly adult, but neither are they particularly kiddie in nature either. More or less showing Tim Drake get beaten to death by Joker in the newest Batman offering is pretty dark stuff.

True direct to dvd would be the best bet especially when some hollywood films don't even manage theatres long. Actually most of those movies mentioned were dark for being pg movies. then you have fritz the cat lol

I just got New Frontier and it's a good thing I put it in before I let my kid see it, what with somebody shooting themselves in the head in the first five minutes. Holy crap!

Agreed, they up it a notch for sure from TV and it brings a lot to the story's impact.

*shrugs shoulders*

I liked The Animatrix.

That certainly wasn't for kids.

Plenty of Manga out there that isn't for kids.

Popular?

I don't know.

Not those particular movies... but animation for adults is alive and kicking. Your Family Guy, American Dad, South Park and all the shows on Adult Swim are not for kids. Of course, most of those aren't movies... unless you count the Family Guy DVD releases, South Park movie and the Aqua Teen movie.

Most mature anime movies do better straight to dvd in america. The ghost in the shell movies are a good example because that show isn't for kids who wouldn't understand half of what's going on. Plus the studios wouldn't take a risk on them. Heck i doubt the next Miazaki film (howl's castle and such) will be in a theatre.

I guess it all depends on your definition of "traditional" and what would fall into that category...

Adult Anime and Hentai are huge, so yes adult animated films are certainly popular today probably more popular than ever thanks to the Internet...

lol Sadly I don't think hentai really counts as a traditional animated film. I'm not sure mask of the phantasm would count although it was really dark for that time.
