Words removed from real Graflex bottom?

I recently bought a real grafle flash gun and Sym Cha's keen eyes noticed that "3 Cell" had been removed. It's been buffed out with some rotary tool. Has anyone else come across this? Any theories as to why? I'm baffled.

Maybe the bottom wasnt from a 3-cell and someone tried to hide it? Werent there ones that were much longer? Maybe it was cut down as a replacement... Idk, just a guess.
