Wonder Woman Work in Progress

Hello, everyone! I've been a lurker on RPF for a few months, but I haven't had anything to contribute until recently.

I'm making a Wonder Woman costume inspired by Terry Dodson's artwork:

It's far from done, but I finally got the corset (minus the eagle) finished today, and as it's the first sewing of any quality I've done in some time, I felt compelled to show it off.

I did have a few full body shots, so I wouldn't be making my introductory post with a bunch of torso closeups, but unfortunately my expression in each one was absolutely horrible and I didn't notice until I'd already changed out of the costume.

If you look closely at that last picture, you can see that a few of the grommets are hanging loose on the corset lacing. I'm going to have to go back through and stitch every grommet into place, because the hole punch that came with them made the holes too wide. Which is a pain, but it's almost done, so I can't be too bothered about it.

Thanks! I'm hoping to get started on the eagle and belt within the week, but I'm helping a friend with his Captain America outfit, so it might be a few days.

Hi Lauralot,
I too am a lurker looking for inspiration, and you just gave me plenty ! Thank you for sharing your WIP. I would love to make a corset myself, but it seems quite an undertaking for a novice like me. How difficult did you find it? Can't wait to see how the belt goes....good luck xx

The corset was actually surprisingly easy. I found the shorts more difficult, but that's probably because I used the same material for the lining as I did for the outside, and kept getting confused as to which was which.

The corset pattern I used was Laughing Moon Merchantile's Dore corset (though I modified it to remove the front opening) which should be simple enough if you have sewing experience. It's time consuming, but I found the pattern easy to read and follow (I only made one mistake on it; the boning channels are meant to be sewn from the right side first, but I misread it and started on the lining side).

Just don't make the holes for the eyelets too big. That was my main problem, and I had to spend the afternoon sewing them into place because they kept falling out.

Thanks to you and ATLANTHIA for your encouragement!

Thanks for the tips Lauralot....I'm pretty much inexperienced with a sewing machine and think the last proper thing I made was an apron for my mum at school lol. Actually, I have made a few things I'd forgotten about, like my son's christening robe and a dress for myself which I did actually wear. So.....maybe I'm not as bad as I thought :wacko

Hope you're day is going well and thanks again for your help and advice.

Oh, Lord, the new TV show version. Granted, judging from the leaked script the wardrobe was the least of the show's problems, but still. The worst part is it could have been a passable design if not for the terrible choice of fabrics. Well, fabric and the plasticky armor.

As always, thanks for the encouragement!

I'd meant to update this thread with each additional piece of the costume I finished, but between preparing to move back to college and my summer internship, I haven't had much free time. So here's the 75% complete costume (sans wig, boots, and makeup - I do have the lasso, but not in these pictures) against the heroic backdrop of...my best friend's kitchen.

I should note that I don't actually have black irises...Photobucket's attempts to remove the red eye worked a little too well.

The tiara, belt, and bracelets are vinyl with an adhesive foam backing to make them more rigid. The eagle is vinyl with cotton batting for the backing, and held into the corset with gold brads.

The outfit is much warmer than I anticipated, considering how little clothing there is, but I think that may have more to do with my wearing a tightly laced corset and walking around in ninety degree weather more than anything to do with the fabric.

Hello again, everyone! The costume's finally finished, just in time for Halloween.

I didn't encounter any super villains while running around on the 31st, though I did have to contain a few wild animals:
