Wolverine's Jackets

So if I'm understanding correctly the screen used jacket was horse hide and the color was M19 and ......that combination is no longer available.

As far as I understood it horsehide and mi9 are two different leathers and both are no longer available.

Yeah, there has been a lot of conflicting info about this. Mantis says that it was MI9 because that's what Dawn told him years ago. However, Mike (mmvanson) says that the original was horse. There is a possibility that they made one from horse, and one from MI9. I believe that there was at least one horshied version. Remember that picture of the "Prototype" jacket in the Vanson shop? That is without a doubt horsehide. So my logic goes like this. If they made that one from horse, then they probably made the screen versions from horse as well.

So how can we be claiming to get accurate Wolverine jackets. We seem to be experimenting with different leathers and colors. Then we have to pay extra to get them to fix their incorrect stipe pattern and hope that they actually make the changes that we requested and paid for. :confused I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this mess.

For what it's worth the screen jacket looks like horsehide to my untrained eye.

Jay, your apprehension is understandable. If I were in your position right now, I'd probably feel the same way. In the end, I just had to take the plunge. Now granted, I didn't get THE 'definitive' Wolverine jacket, it is still freakin' awesome. I figured somebody had to go first if anybody else was gonna ever order from Vanson. I'm not sure what else I can tell you. You're the only one who can decide what you want to do.

see i agree with jay, and have posted my feelings before about telling the real maker of the jacket how to make their jacket. there has got to be some photos of the jacket at FOX somewhere. they take hundreds of photos for reference and things like that, so they are bound to have some, even of the weathered jacket no less.

on a side note, looking at the jacket that DAVID1 has been making, leads me to believe that the original colors of the jacket mwy have been just like the old wolverine suit colors, back when he had the brown and orange suit?

if you look at the pic from DAVIDs jacket you will see what i mean, maybe that was the original color concept, it makes sense?

I still can't wait for my tax return to get here so I can give Vanson a call.

About them having to read this thread about making the jacket, from what I understand the lady who used to do it, doesn't work there anymore. It's like when I'm at work, everytime I cut up a fish, it isn't exactly how I did it the last time. The methods are the same, but sometimes there will be variations. The way I cut up a fish, or cow, even though it's the same method as my co-workers, will vary from one guy to the next.

I don't know if this even made sense :cry

yeah that makes sense, but there should be a pattern that one should follow, which should make the differences minute, honestly in the begining with vanson i would say that there was no pattern, i remember someone posting a pic of their jacket (it may have been nightsabers first) and the waist stripes looked to be 2 times as wide as they should have been, and about 2 inches too short at the waist, so thats like cutting up a fish with a knife and them someone else trying it with a spoon?

Exactly. I don't think they've ever been right. All the ones I've seen seem to look different. Also, I really haven't seen a lot of people saying "I got it, the customer service was great, it fits me, and it's exactly what I ordered......the first time."

Just to clarify, I did not post my thoughts here to bash Vanson. I love Vanson's jackets. The quality is amazing and I feel lucky to have an opportunity get one made by the company that made them for the film. The replicas are all really nice but I want a Vanson. I'm just being honest about my concerns. I want to make sure I know what to expect before I order one. The money is not an issue for me and I would expect to wait a while to get a custom jacket made. As long as they are honest with me and the jacket looks like it's supposed to I'll bee happy. I don't want the run around and I don't want a jacket that isn't wht I ordered. Maybe these problems have been solved already and I'm just not up to date. It's just that there's not a lot that I've heard that gives me confidence. I hope to be proven wrong.

Well I have to defend Vanson here. :) I think the big problem with people thinking they never got it right might just be the prop department giving the jacket an enormous amount of abuse. Who knows how the original jacket realy looked like before they got it in der destructive little hand. The stripes might have been red and bleached. The leather could have been very dark. etc.. The only critique that seems fair is the one about the stripe pattern.

Oh and I am a sattisfied costumer. I made various changes to the jacket and every one of them was made as I wanted it (yeah I got a snap back collar and my zipers close top down, but I realy didn't pay attention to these details back then when allmost nobody knew who made the damn jacket. :) ). It fits me perfectly (see pictures on pages thirtysomething) and is exactly what I ordered.....the first time.

So, now you have it. ;)

OK, so there's one guy out of how many? :lol

The zippers and the snap thing don't bother me. That's minor stuff. However I would expect them to actually make the changes if they were requested at the time of purchase. Also, for mine (should I finally order one) I would go with the gold stripes instead of the red. Your jacket is the best I've seen. That's just my opinion. Except that it's in the correct horsehide which is..........ahem........not available anymore.

Cole, the stripes wouldn't have been red no matter what. Wolverines, themselves, have yellow stripes on their sides, and brown fur, so it would make no sense for red stripes.

The jacket in X3 got blue parts which wouldn't make much sense either following your argument. ;) The picture I got all the years back as original untreated jacket had red stripes for example. And you have to admit if you make a new jacket look like it has been worn for 15 years + red could be weathered to the golden/yellow color they ended up with. :D

Well, X3 was a whole different director and crew. So it was a different direction. Those shirts he wore weren't exactly "Wolverine-like." And same goes with the second film, it was just too stylized compared to the first film. I still would have liked to see wolverine wear a bomber jacket in one of the films.

here is a pic comp of what i meant by the old wolverine suit colors, maybe the prop department wanted and possibly had the original jacket made with these colors?

THE JACKET IN THE MOVIE IS BROWN HORSEHIDE COLOR CODE(BRHO), HORSEHIDE ONLY COMES IN THREE (3) COLORS.......BLACK HORSEHIDE(BLHO), TAN HORSEHIDE(TAHO), AND BROWN HORSEHIDE(BRHO).
THE COSTUMING DEPT. GOT TWO JACKETS TO MESS AROUND WITH, THE FIRST JACKET WAS MI9 IN COLOR, SO THEY STARTED W/THAT ONE AND RELIZED THAT WEATHERING IT WAS NOT GOING TO WORK, AND THEN THEY WENT TO THE OTHER JACKET, THE BROWN HORSEHIDE(BRHO) AND SAID " WERE KEEPING THIS ONE AND SENDING THE OTHER ONE BACK SO YOU CAN KEEP ON DISPLAY"
