Wolverine Cowl (More Progress Pics on Page 2)

(Look lower in the thread to see the wolverine sculpt)

This is my first attempt at any kind of prop making. In fact I have not worked with clay on any level in over 10 years.

For my first project I decided to try my hand and building a Batman Cowl. I have no specific inspiration for this cowl. This project is intended to start building up my skill and learning more about the sculpting process and more about molding rather than ending up with a specific end product.

These pics are what I was able to accomplish Today (Day 1). My plan as it stands now is to finish shaping some things (i.e. the ears), smooth out the surface, then add some more detail.

Any suggestions/advice is appreciated.

Re: Batman Cowl (My First Project)

How did you make your head cast? Or it it just a standard one?

Looks cool thus far

Re: Batman Cowl (My First Project)

Looks good. I've been reluctant to try making a batman cowl for so long. Been trying to find some other way to do it, but seeing how good yours looks make me feel like I could go the sculpting route

Re: Batman Cowl (My First Project)

Looking good so far. The only thing I suggest is to chop the ears off of your lifecast, so you won't have to add unwanted bulk to try and hide the ears.

Re: Batman Cowl (My First Project)

I love it so far, other than what pitchforknumb said about the ears, I think maybe the brow line is jutting out a bit too much for the standard batman cowl, but this is your own version from what I can tell and it looks great! :thumbsup

Re: Batman Cowl (My First Project)

I think some more muscular/anatomical features would benefit. It's tough to "stylize" a Bat cowl without it looking too sharp or odd.... but darn fine base work brother!

Thank you all for the encouragement and advice. As I mentioned in my first post I am really new and inexperienced in prop making.

I actually need to pick your brains on a problem that I found out about last night.

I went to start day 2 of my project only to find that the clay I had used cracked and separated (split) when it dried.

Is there a trick to preventing this, or is it as simple as I need a specific kind of clay? Please advise:

(I will post pics of the problem when I get home tonight, so you can see the issue)

Re: Batman Cowl (My First Project)

Usually for scuplts like this, you want to use a non-drying clay. Chavant medium clay is a great clay to work with, and can be found out art stores like Michaels. But if you do stick with an air-drying clay, you want to wrap a plastic bag over it, with a damp cloth in it.

Re: Batman Cowl (My First Project)

Good for you for trying something just to gain the skills! I think that is fantastic.

Re: Batman Cowl (My First Project)

Which company did you get your armature from? Remember that a lot of them are much smaller than a real head - 21 or 22" instead of 23-25 like some of us mellons have. A 1/4 on 4 sides adds an inch, but that could be too small still.

Looks great!

Re: Batman Cowl (My First Project)

The Armature is from Monster Makers. I did not research the size before I got it, so I just looked it up. It is the 22".

I also googled to try to find a larger one, but could not fine any. Where is a good source to find a Full Head Armature that is larger than 22 inches?

Re: My First Project (Now with Wolverine attempt)

Since my first project ended up drying up and breaking, I thought I should try something new for my next attempt. Since right now I am practicing and trying to learn as much as I can about the process of mask making, I thought making a Wolverine Cowl could be fun.

Again, there is not a specific design I have in mind. Please share with me your thoughts and suggestions. Thank you

Re: Wolverine Cowl (My First Project)

Here is Day 2 of my project. I smoothed out the surface some, seperated the nose section and finished shaping the ears.

As I said, I am very new. How do I get a completly smooth surface?

If this ends up looking good, my plan is make a mold (of just the clay portion), fill the mold with either a resin or very firm rubber, then attach the wolverine face mask to a yellow lycra hood.

also, I am open to any suggestions.

Re: Batman Cowl (My First Project)

looks great man, sorry about the batman cowl, it was looking pretty good too!

P.S. you might want to change the name of the thread so people will know its not for a batman cowl anymore.
