In my first thread I plan to design and build exact replica of the most recent Wolverine Claws!

So the first stage was looking for reference images as always. And I noticed that the claws throughout the franchise look different. They change.

So this gave me the opportunity to chose what claws I was going to make. And I decided on the most recent look, from 'The Wolverine' and 'X-men Days of Future Past' because I think these look the best

Next I used the reference images to draw a design, I did this straight on the computer because it's easier, and I didn't have a pencil to hand.

Because I wanted it to look exactly like the films, I'd printed out several times before using the Laser Cutter so I could get the size and shape right.

Once I got the design right I went straight onto laser cutting in card, so I could be sure I wouldn't get any of the sizes wrong after converting it to the Laser Cutting format.

I actually found some more images and ended up choosing to resize it, its difficult because my fist isn't as big as Hugh Jackman's, I'm only seventeen, so I'm designing for an adult fist, and not my own.

Eventually I got the size right and I could move onto cutting on wood, and I'd chosen to use 9mm MDF because its cheap and easy to sand.

If you're wondering why I posted things so close together, its because I did it all today. I'd just finished my exams so I deserved a reward!
I've now started the sanding, I'll take my time with this because the shape and curve of the claws I'm after is quite difficult to replicate.

I've almost finished the sanding for the claws. Using MDF has some problems, the sharp end frays, and if it is wet it expands. So I will have to coat it in something so I can continue to sand it.

I'm still slightly worried about the size as well, the screen used claws I had found on a Prop Auction site said they were 9" so it may just be the size of the bevel.

So while I wait for the Silicon Mold to arrive, I've been hardening the MDF claw. I mixed some PVA with MDF fibers that I got from the sanding.

I'm still not 100% happy with the size, the claws in my opinion resemble the film claws, but may be too small. during the prototype stage I had cut several sizes of the MDF claws, so I may sand one of the larger ones to shape to see if it looks any better.

Today I had added some bondo to the edges, to make sure they are clearly defined. I'm really just trying to make both sides parallel and sharp looking.

I also cut and shaped the metal wire that will connect the claws to my fist, and that came out quite well, a tight fit to my fist.

Hi all, I apologise to those who where following the post I've been very busy, with moving house. To holiday, and other projects. I did do some work on my claws and I'm excited to start the next stage.
Ive never used latex or silicone mould before so naturally I made a mess and it didn't work. What was worse the MDF expanded because of the moisture. Live and learn.
However, once it had dried out the claws was the perfect size compared to the reference pictures, so I'm glad it happened!
I coated the claw in fibreglass so it wouldn't happen again and I'm looking at the best silicone and resin for the claws.
I'll get some pictures soon and I really want to finish the project, I've high hopes!

Awesome project man! I love Wolvie. I have some cheap knockoff metal ones. Looking forward to seeing your progress. The biggest issue with mine is that there is too much space between the handle that rests in my Palm and the back of the claws. It only looks good if my fists are clenched.

Thanks! Ever used the metal ones for attacking fruit? Haha. I think that would be the same for a lot of the replicas, even the ones on film. Jackman would always have to keep his fists clenched.

I have made the silicone mould, and I'm finally buying the resin. I've decided to use the cold cast method to get the metal colour for the claws. I'll get some photos soon, aiming to finish within the week depending on how quickly the resin dries and how quickly the resin actually arrives.

This was from a while back, lost the password for my account! I have successfully made a mould for my claws, however the result had some slight imperfections, I only realised this after I'd cast it. I did however make several successfully resin casts of the claws.

I chose to cast the claws with aluminium powder to give it a silver colour. once it had dried, I sanded the claws lightly to give it a metal sheen, and get rid of any imperfections. making three smooth claws.

The next step was to try to make a grip for the inside of my hand to connect to the claws. it was important to ensure everything fitted securely to my knuckles, so it looked realistically like it had come straight out of my forearm.

I originally used clay for the grip, though this proved to be a bad choice, as the clay let some of the claws dry loosely, and even cracked after use. I have bought some polymorph, so I can make a tighter grip easily. I've had experience with polymorph before and I cant recommend it enough.
