WIP Victorian Ray Gun

Though Im also in the middle of doing a few retro art deco ray guns, ive had the itch to do a Victorian Steampunkish type ray gun as well. So far ive just got most of the parts I want to use, but ive also done a comp of what the final product is planned to look like. The parts pictured are a brass candleholder top, two glass vases glued together with a brass napkin holder in between them, and the bottom piece is a larger more elaborate resin candle stand with the top dish removed already, and a small drawer knob. More pictures as it progresses, should get further tomorrow night.

I'm looking forward to this build, Kylash.
Is there any way you can insert details inside the glass sections before they're glued together?

That would be awesome. Here's a site that might inspire some ideas in you:

The Bakken Library and Museum: The Leyden Jar

Also, are you planning on making the grip a little more user-friendly? I appreciate its ornate, period appearance, but it looks impractical... unless this pistol was not meant for human hands? :love

Cool project. Looking forward to more updates (after the raptor claws have shipped :lol ).

The glass body parts you mean? The plan was to actually paint and weather those to match the rest. They are pretty thick and I dont have a good enough power tool to drill out the bottoms, so putting anything inside is pretty difficult. The grip actually fits into my hand very nicely, but I may alter it a bit, im going to add a more obvious trigger, with the way it is held, the trigger actually ends up being alot further towards the front.

got the handle cut down, so the hard part is done. Thinking about putting a finger ring where the trigger button will be and filling up some of the gaps on the front of the grip, to fit the hand better. More pics soon :)

:confused I'm not going to say anything.

:lol

Looking forward to more WIP pics. :thumbsup

P.S. The finger ring as a trigger guard sounds like a nice idea. And I know the type of thick vase you mean. Those would be quite difficult to cut without some serious tools.

couple layout shots, and the rough resculpting I did on the grip, as you can see, very easy to handle :p

I really like this. It kinda reminds me of the Kropserkel ones:

Great job so far.

Those ones are acutlaly what inspired me :) So im trying not to rip them off, i think its unique enough :p Cant decide which way i want the scope to be, added a large funnel shaped thing on the other end and cant decide...

I have been building my steampunkish electro-static charge gun today. I will post some stuff up when it's a bit closer to being done.

little more progress, added the glass marble holder on the butt of the grip, and added a little more to the scope...still cant decide which side of it i want facing forward...

That look awesome - truely an excellent use of found items. The only criticism I might have would be in the scope.. It looks too much like a candle holder. Perhaps something inspired by 19th century microscopes/telescopes? I look forward to more pics.

p.s. Drilling glass isn't THAT difficult, you'll just need a diamond drill bit.

Really nice work there. It's an instinct to see more in an object than what is obvious.
Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. I especially appreciate your work on recreating the flow
with your own trigger. It's a perfect flow.

Not to detract from your Victorian weapon, but here are a couple more recent extrapolations that utilize
similar media:

Very interesting concept...can't wait to see it completed. It's very refreshing to see new original prop design trends toward Victorian-style pistols. Reminds me of the Weta Ray Guns...but I think yours is just as cool, maybe cooler. :thumbsup

Wow Kylash...
I like it...Very W W West ...or Doc Brown or...

I love this stuff...

Kropserkel I love yours too..I didn't know you did that stuff too :)
