WIP - Bat Girl Armor

Hi! I'm new here, but I am married to The Star Lord Zipper guy. (&Staar Lord Maan)

Although I have been a costumer for many years, up until now, I have limited my efforts to fabric and leather, so this is my first costume that includes fabrication.

I am making an armored Bat Girl costume, based on some fan concept art I saw online. Many thanks to Thorsson & Associates Workshop for his helpful suggestions!

Materials:
the soft backing is tool drawer liner, picked up for cheap at a parking lot sale at our local discount hardware store.
the hard panels are Sintra (foam PVC)
Still debating between canvas strapping and 2.5" wide grosgrain to connect all the bits.

I started out trying to sketch the pattern on cardboard and then trace that onto the foam. That worked for the legs, but was a MISERABLE failure for the torso. So, I started over and used an old Ren Faire trick and, with my husband's help, created a duct tape model to work from.

I've cut out the foam and Sintra, I will be refining the shape of the panels and experimenting with the strapping next!

Here are some photos of the work in progress. Suggestions and constructive criticism will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! Concept art reference.JPGTracing from the cardboard.JPGCutting out the pieces.JPGColor Coded.JPG

Cool idea with the tool drawer backing, I'll have to try that sometime.

WIP - Mask is DONE!

Didn't have the time to get a head mold done, but still wanted that form-fitted look. Worbla didn't give me the texture or rigidity I wanted, so I tried Sculpy, which warped badly while baking without a mold to bake it on. So I combined the two - Worbla base to get it form-fitted with a Sculpy overlay for the overall shape cleaner texture. A few uneven spots smoothed out with Bondo after baking.

Aside from the patchwork coloration, it looks great! All it needs is a little matte black spray paint. 3-4 view.JPGBack view.JPGFront View.JPGSide view.JPG

I was thinking about the inside of this thing...if you would like to raid the leather stock to line it for comfort, please feel free :)

Good work so far ! ...i was thinking, are you going to use sintra for the chest ? because it would be easier to use Foam or Worbla for the curves.
