I’ve never been good at WIP threads, as I’m always more interested in the “getting it done” part of a project, but as a few folks have pointed out to me, I should slow down and give it a try. So here goes; if you’re not familiar with the thread that captures all the Avengers Hawkeye costume information (or at least what we have been able to put together or make educated guesses at) try here. This will be my personal thread on how I’ll put all that info into an “as close as possible” Hawkeye costume or if things go sideways, a thread on “how I spent a lot of money and time for naught”.
Before going any further, for those looking to do something along these lines realize, this is not a costume for the feint of heart, from both the time / patience and the resource (READ: Money)standpoint. But I’m a firm believer in “if you’re going to do it, do it right”.
First up patterns.
As I’m not a seamstress by any stretch I decided to try something a bit simpler. I took some old jeans and divided up the sections from the information we have and then plotted everything out. I did the same with some heavy duty interfacing for the vest and its parts. I used interfacing as it’s closer to the Cordura than normal sewing pattern paper/material.
I speced out the leather buckle pieces for the pants lags and vest/pants attachment based on the size of the buckle and the snaps.
On the boots/spats pattern, I purchased one of the overseas cheap PU costume boots and then tore them apart, made corrections to the overall pattern and then cut them from 6-7oz. leather and lighter weight garment leather for the tongue. The boot base is mentioned in the thread identified above. Once all the pieces are sewn together, I’ll remove the boot upper and attach the boot shaft. This is one portion that will NOT be screen accurate, as the boot base is close but not 100% and there are some differences that have to be kept in order to make the boot functional footwear.

Next up materials.
All materials/notions were identified in the other thread except for a handful. However, even after securing some that were “close” they still had to be modified. And eve some had to be recreated through various sources. For example the main pants material, I located some lightweight denim that matches the jacquard pattern but they had to be dyed several times to get a color match, and even then they do not have the sheen that the movie fabric does as they are a natural fiber vs. synthetic. My thought is to coat them with a silicone waterproofing agent to get the sheen…

That’s all for today, next time I’ll tackle the boot buckles-stripping and attaching to the shaft.
Thanks for reading!
