WIP: Accurate Marion's letter from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I'm working on a very accurate version of Marion's letter from KotCS. I started out using the images from the forums but am slowly either replacing them with my own or reworking/improving existing ones. I've already been working on this for about a week but I still have a lot of changes to make.

I found a Peruvian Airmail envelope on eBay which matched the screen used prop and even the chevrons lined up. So I used that as my size basis. While working on this prop I noticed that two different props existed. Everthing is positioned slightly differently on both and some elements look quite different. The address labels for example are both handwritten so are not identical. One of the stamps is even upside down on one of the props.

Other details I noticed while working on this was that two of the stamps look quite odd. They look like they have a dot matrix pattern like you would find on newspaper print, so I did my best to replicate that too.
I'm working in Photoshop so it's done in layers meaning I can print the envelope with ink postage marks, then print the stamps and labels separetely, cut them out and stick them on. This will make the postage marks look especially realistic.

Once I'm happy with the envelope I'll see if I can move on to the letter. I've already done an improved Mutt & Oxley photo. I don't think I would be able to improve on the map/diagrams already created by other members though!

If I ever get this finished I might offer them for sale complete and ready to display :)

Those are halftone dots. Same as used in newspapers and magazines (or any other commercially printed images).

Weathered the post marks a bit to make them all unique and more resemble the real ones.

Man! I think this is amazing!!! :eek

Especially the postmarks look like real stamp ink (at least on the pics).
What printer do you use?
And how can you cut those tiny detalis on the stamp borders?

Looks dead on already! :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

That's the Photoshop image you're looking at. I did do a test with the stamps and if they are printed with the envelope texture around them and cut with straight edges with the correct contrast between stamp border and the envelope texture, they look almost convincing until you look at them up close.

But I am looking into ways of cutting the stamp edge too.

Been busy. Done the letter and Skull map/symbols although I might re-do them when I get better source material. The envelope is an older prototype. I'm waiting for supplies to arrive to do the proper one including tools for cutting out the stamp edges. :love

Got a question, is the photo supposed to fit in the envelope? I printed it at just over 6" x 4" (scaled it up from Indy's thumb). It seems it would have to be printed a bit on the small side to fit the envelope.

Well, I'm happy to report that the stamps are turning out great! At first I was a little disappointed that the stamp edges didn't look like REAL stamps, but when I looked again at the stamps on the screen used prop I realised that neither do they!

Here they are, very rough around the edges but check how close they are in the comparison picture. :)

Still working on this. The envelope is looking good. Notice the address label is part of the envelope and not a stuck on label - just like the screen used prop. I've printed the envelope on thin paper similar to a real Airmail envelope. I've noticed some subtle differences between the stamps on the prop and the real world stamps, so I've made those changes as well.

I'm completely re-doing the written letter by painting over every single character and tidying up the edges. As you can imagine, this is a great deal of work and I've only got about four lines done so far.

Great work on this - I especially love the stamps. :thumbsup

I'll also echo WinstonWolf's comment that I would be very excited to see these made available.
