Will my custom cradle deform lightsaber grips?

I'm building two custom wooden cradles to install in a shadow box for my Anakin ROTS saber. The width will be about 3/4"

The MR case, which I've never seen in person, has some kind of grip cutouts, I believe. If I just do a normal half-circle shaped cradle, will the grips the saber rests on deform/warp/dent over time? I'll be lining the wood with a thin strip of velvet or something to protect the saber, but maybe I should slightly pad that rear cradle?

Thoughts? I hate to ruin it...

Shouldn't, unless the saber gets too warm - the MR grips aren't rubber, they're abs plastic that's coated (same tech as used in the interior of a BMW, oddly enough). The notch in the MR cutout is just to keep the saber aligned on the stand.

So if I simply make the 'radius' of the rear cradle larger so the saber is level, I shouldn't have to sweat the grips? Cool.
