Wierd Jurassic Park question: What is the prop on Grants belt?

In the original JP, Grant had this "pouch" on his belt that I haven't been able to figure out. It looks like it's leather, it's oval, and it is a pouch. What's in it? A knife? A compass? Maybe a diggers brush? Does anyone know?

The leather one would probably be pretty simple to put together once you have a U-Dig-It trowel. Grant's pouch seems to have the front covered in gaffer tape as there does not seem to be any embossed logo and may have stitching going all the way to the tip and I have yet to see that stitching detail on the leather pouch/sheath. There was a black fiber reinforced rubber version that does have the stitching going all the way to the tip, but the material seems a bit thin compared to Grant's.

Wow! Good spot! I sadly possess little to any "crafting" skills... Any suggestions on alternate style belt pouches to utilize or a possible bead on where to find one of these things in the wild/online??
