Why so serious?1:1 Heath as the Joker Finished pics on page 6

Re: Why so serious?1:1 Heath as the Joker WIP( Update )

Hi mate, please don't take this as anything other than constructive critique .

As it stands, the Brow is too sharp and high/wide. It's an easy mistake to make and have done it myself in the past as you misinterperate the shape of eyebrows as actual form. Have a look at a life cast if you have one and you will see that the brow area is very soft.

Also, the chin and jawline is a bit too low and maybe the mouth to high.

Finally, I have noticed that the face looks a bit flat, ie the forehead, cheeks all look a bit planar. A good trick is to stand behind your sculpt and look directly down on it so you can see the top profile. Do this with a life cast to hand and you can compare the curve of the face.

Please don't see any of this a negative, you have a really strong sculpt there and I think it could be really amazing if you can lock down the anatomy a bit more.

If you want me to edit this post, just let me know

Re: Why so serious?1:1 Heath as the Joker WIP( Update )

Not at all rich. I wanna hear all your advice and critique, i see what you are saying about some of the anatomy problems. I just posted up pictures to get this kinda advice to be honest as im still learning. Ill get back at it soon and try to sort out some of those problems that you;ve mentioned and once again thanks for the advice rich

Re: Why so serious?1:1 Heath as the Joker WIP( Update )

I agree in so much..... The face on this sculpt is to flat in top profile (looking down). Everything from the tip of the nose backwards should be a kind of swept back...V... or subtle ...U... Yours is to much like a ..._... flat face look.

Proportionally I'd look at bringing the eyes in a tough... reducing the bone structure of the eyebrows (narrow that whole area so the sides of the face are a much more straight up appearance) lower the mouth a bit... the outside corners of the eyes should be slightly higher that the tear-ducts. As for the height of the brow... a good guide is to use the rule that the eyes are almost always half way between the top of the head and the bottom of the chin :)

Re: Why so serious?1:1 Heath as the Joker WIP( Update )

Thanks Phil, its great getting advice off seasoned vets ilke you and Rich ha ha. I'm gonna be back at this in a few days and i;ll try my best to address all these things that you and rich have pointed out. Hopefully in the end it will be a really nice piece. I think so far its definately an improvement over my keaton.

Re: Why so serious?1:1 Heath as the Joker WIP( Update )

Hey Johnny,

I think you have made some great progress and I know this could be phenomenal.

A few things I noticed apart from the slightly flat looking profile as mentioned were the following:

Eyes:

Maybe the left eye needs to be lowered just a tad, as well as the eyes elongated horizontally. Also, does the right eye look a bit slanted? Might just be the pic.

Nose:

I think the nose is a tad bulbous. HL had a very distinctive nose and nostral flair, which I pulled some pics to show what I mean.

Lips:

I think the ridges of his top lip are a tad high.

Face:

Actually, I think your facial structure itself is pretty perfect, as are the ears.

I hope these pics help a bit, you are ALMOST there. I am no sculpter, so obviously I am no expert.

Re: Why so serious?1:1 Heath as the Joker WIP( Update )

Okay guys been starting the changes to this today in line with what Fettster and Cyberman were saying. and to be honest it looks way better so thanks guys. Also changed the nse shape a bit. I also finally started blocking in the scars again cos i'm confident that its nearly finished. I'm very happy with it even if there are a few problems with it. I think it looks pretty good. Im gonna keep going with the changes needed tomorrow and hopefully wrap it up and start the final texturing.

Re: Why so serious?1:1 Heath as the Joker WIP( Update )

Yeah i'll have finished pics tonight as the sculpt is now finished and ready to be molded. Thanks again for the comments and advice guys, i'm still trying to get a feel for this but think i;m getting closer every sculpt. Gonna be starting another sculpt soon and hopefully i;ll get a bit better every time. Cheers again guys, I'm sure this would have probably been sh$% without it. More to come soon

Re: Why so serious?1:1 Heath as the Joker WIP( Update )

Hey guys, here's pic of the almost finished sculpt. Changed a few minor things after this such as the right ear but didnt take any pics as my camera died. and its currently being molded now. Really looking forward to painting this. Thanks again for all the comments and stuff. Think it will definately be a lot better for it.

Cheers

I may not have the best eagle eye when it comes to sculpting, but I think it looks really good :thumbsup

Re: Why so serious?1:1 Heath as the Joker WIP( Update )

I would suggest experimenting with the eyes like this:

That would be PRETTTTY damn creepy!!! Nice job!

Re: Why so serious?1:1 Heath as the Joker WIP( Update )

Looks good Johnny....

One last thing though and its quite important. You need to refine those ears some more. Give then some depth - ears are quite complex forms, actually. A good suggestion would be to google some images of random ears and just use them as key life studies, obviously modifying them to look more like Heath Ledgers ears.

There he is!!!!! Gotta say johnny that this looks great, I was struggling to see Heath in the last lot of pictures but you really bought him out!
I think it's a credit to you to be able to get so far with a sculpt and then have the guts to tear it down an start again. In my opinion, that's what makes a real artist

Re: Why so serious?1:1 Heath as the Joker WIP( Update )

Thanks Guys, hopefully he turns out good when he;s fully finished. Cheers Rich, its really hard to stare at the sculpt and decide that it looks wrong and then make the plunge to start it again. very very frustrating but worth it in the end i think as i'd never be happy with settling for something i knew could have been done much better.

Thanks Phil, The ears actually look much better in person but i aggree thats it definately a place i need to work on although i think they are definately an improvement over the Keaton ears that i sculpted a while back. Just need some more practice and i say they will get a lot better.

Cheers again guys and ill be back soon on this thread with pics of the painted silicone casting before i punch the hair and im gonna be starting another thread soon with another likeness i;ve been working on. Stay tuned...... ha ha
