Why on Earth Can The Man of Steel Float?

if he can defeat gravity, surely he can float.

the hard thing to explain is how can superman (who breathes air) fly in the upper atmosphere without passing out?

in the lois and clark series they said he can just hold his breath for a very long time (i have 20minutes in my head but there are humans that can do that so probably longer)

other cartoons had him using breathing gear for longer jaunts.. so yeh.. probably just holding his breath.

on the flying thing.. the pk explaination is probably the best.. the other is that he can alter his molecular density, hence why in a lot of incarnations supes can be floored by a strong opponent but when he knows it's coming he can take it without flinching. he literally gets tougher. that said that does open up the issue of how can he be strong AND flying at the same time as the 2 are mutually exclusive..

in the end though.. its fantasy.. because batma.. errr superman

So we have:

1) He's superman, he can do whatever the hell he wants!
2) Mad flying skills.
3) The atmosphere on Earth is thicker, so he floats on atoms. (Wow!)
4) Something about technorealism control of own gravity field, etc... (Huh?)
5) He's been doing it for years.
6) He flaps his arms very fast!
7) Because he's an alien.
8) The upward force generated by his flight power is matched to the downward pull of gravity, thereby keeping him still in midair.
9) Powerful farts
10) Something about displacement of energy, like water displacement. (Hmmm)
11) A lack of red underwear on the suit.

After all that... I guess post #20 will have to suffice. Thanks, tripoli!
