Why is IKEA so hard to deal with DETOLF shelf

We've got two near us here in the L.A. area (Burbank and Carson) and we've been to both. Just a week or so ago we got a new TV unit, bringing our total to:

DETOLF
MIKAEL corner desk
some 6' floating shelf thingy
giant EXPEDIT
couple of bar stools
huge BONDE TV unit w/top extention

I guess that's it. It's not my favorite type of furniture, but hot damn is it affordable.

How did some of you guys gets lights in the top of your Detolfs?

Would that simply have been an option I didn't notice when I bought mine? There's hole in the top panel of my Detolf that a round plastic cap fits into, I thought it was coming with a light but it didn't.

(apologies if this has been mentioned already)..

Cheers

They don't come with the Detolf but most people use the NON halogen light. You just attach it (with screws) to the inside top of the cabinet and run the electrical wire out of the hole in the top. Here is a link to the NON light on the IKEA web site.

WTF?

The Detolf package is about 6 feet long and weights 89 pounds (think 4 panes of glass shelving, 4 panes to make the sides, plus bases and metal) . Plus I think IKEA uses FedEx, so that's why shipping is so much.

Ok, I live in BFE Arkansas and the nearest Ikea is 6.5 hours away. We all know the outrageous shipping. It looks really bad if you are just getting one unit. For me one unit is $335.00, but it I order 8 it is $940.00 and 10 are $1074.00. This means if you order one it works out to $335.00, 8 would be $117.50, and 10 would be $107.40. Ten units is where the total price levels out. Now if there are any other members in the area, we could find out who is most centrally located, put in a collective order, have them delivered to that member, and pick them up. I know that I will not pay $335.00 for one unit but I do not want to order 8, at least until I see how my things look in the case. Are there any other members in the area? I have family in Southern Illinois if that is more centered. Let me know and lets get an order together. As I said, 10 is were the price levels out but 20 are only 109.50 each. Let me know. If I order 4, that comes to $135.00 each. If no one else is interested I will just order 4. If someone can think of another price cutting idea, let me know.

Two weeks ago I was in Atlanta and stopped off to pick up three. That sucks if they have jacked up the price. I was going for three more in September.

Just a warning on the NON light. It shines a very cold museum like color and might not be that yellow warm color most of us have in our homes. I'm looking for a different light now that more closely matches the rest of the room's lights.

We do not have an IKEA where I live but I recently vacationed in an area that had an IKEA. I was going to take a DETOLF back on the plane with me but I dsicovered they weight 88 pounds in the box, well over the 50 pound limit allowed by the airline. I was disappointed, I did not think they would weigh that much.

I agree, the shipping charges for one item are outrageous. I have ordered quantities of stuff from IKEA and the shipping is much more reasonable, its the only way to go.

mmm, i too have many a detolf...

i painted the tops and bottoms black before i put them together though, so that they'd match my room.

i got 3 in one trip, and i totally understand the shipping costs. man, bringing those up to the second floor.

Painting the base and the top black is pure genious. But there is noway ill dismantle my shelf after it took hours just to slide that plastic wedge between the glass, major headache. I put it together myself but it really is a two man job.

I can sure vouch for the quality of the detolf case.

When the tornado destroyed my apartment back in April, I had two of them in the living room full of props.
The ceiling colapsed on top of them and they were even tossed around a bit.
Not a single piece of glass broke. Aside from minor scratches and smuges from drywall, theye are still in excellent condition. I even had a DVD tower rack from IKEA that was flung out a second story bedroom,..It is in use today,....unfortunately the DVDs became frisbees.

You can see some of the pics here: http://dabar1.com/tornado.html

I believe in them so much that when a friend of mine sold off his cases, I bought all 6 of them.
They bounced all the way to me in the back of a pickup truck, assembled, for 430 miles.
Not one showed the slightest damage.

IKEA,....tornado proof.

I love mine. I also painted the base and top. I didnt really like that wood look. Since I'm painting my family room in some neutural colors, I decided to paint it with Krylon Khaki camo color.

OMG .... :eek , That was an F3. I wouldnÂ’t want to see the result of an F4 or F5.

Hope you had some good insurances.
[/b]

In places it was just about two MPH under an F4 rating.
The asphalt was peeeled off the road in a few small areas.

Yes, insurance paid off, State Farm, Love those guys.
Used the money to buy a house out in the country.
.....and 6 more IKEA cases. Thanks to those cases, my props were banged up a bit, but not destroyed or carried away like most of the rest of our stuff.

To think I used to live within walking distance of the IKEA in Burbank,..now the nearest one is in Chicago or Atlanta,...about 7 hours either way. :cry

They just annonced today that they are opening an IKEA store very near the Cincinnati area. Going to be like 300,000 square feet.

Hurray.
