Why did Thor's hammer change...

... from Thor to The Avengers?

Have looked high and low for the answer, and no one seems to know. I just received "The Art of Marvel's Avengers" book, and was certain the answer would be in there ...but it wasn't.

Has anyone heard an official explanation?

So that now you have to buy TWO different hammers if you want a complete set for your collection. It's bloody GENIUS!

Different director, different art dept, different movie.

...always need to consider the term movie business...has the word business in it.

...and Alan as mentioned...2 toys are better than one.

I don't think the mythology of an indestructible hammer has a lot to do with the explanation you are looking for.

Well This can actuly be becuse of the two dwarf brothers(Sons of the dwarf king Ivalde) that made the hammer in norse myt made the handle to short for Thor

Point taken, but that's outside the Marvel world. Inside that world, how do you justify Mjolnir being changed? We can understand the costume changing, but the hammer?

Lol....I knew there was a reasonable answer

Case closed

:facepalm fortgot this
Also this can be traced back to loki with his deal with the brothers becuse of the gifts to the gods, mjolnir, Odins awsome spear Gunger and frejs ship skidblandner, I won´t go into more but I will say it´s thanks to loki that Mjolnir had a short handle

Jason's got this one:

That's your REAL answer. If you're looking for a fictional "Marvel World" explanation... I dunno. But they'll think of something!

Well, they did start with Iron Man's MkVI, before giving reason for his change to the MkVII

But otherwise, as Yogurt put it = Moouchandising, Moouchandising, Moouchandising!

Different director, different art dept, different movie.

I wouldn't go that far. Iron Man's suit up until the last act had the diamond shape reactor symbol on it's chest until he dawned the Mark 8 suit. Joss specifically wanted the circle back, but didn't want to completely disregard that plot point from Iron Man 2.

As for the hammer looking different? Hey, they're gods. They can reshape whatever the heck they want.

Just like different artists draw the hammer different in the comics, it's a matter of interpreting the same thing in a different manner.

Besides, the differences are so minute that only a very small percentage of the viewers would even notice (that's us RPFers).

Honestly, I doubt if 95% of the people who saw the movie noticed it had changed. Thor had a hammer in "Thor" and he has one in "The Avengers" that's about as far as most people would be concerned.

The same way in-universe you justify Rhodey going from looking like Terrence Howard to Don Cheadle. You ignore it.

Right on the money DuneMuad...

Something fishy about the ironman universe too. Hmmm....Mr. Rhodes must have gotten some work done in between 1 and 2....he just didn't look himself.

Lol...maybe its skrulls....on a bad day....because the resemblance was a bit lacking. Darn drunk skrulls

maybe, since the hammer is in tune with the wielders thoughts and state of being. maybe, It changes itself to suit the person controlling its tastes, and the reason it looked the way it did in thor is that that is the handle's neutral/in between users state. After all, thor could not control it for most of Thor(Movie)
