    This...

I don't really play "What's your favorite..." or "Who's your favorite" any more. But of the men in the biz I'd like to meet before they pass, these two.

Add to the list Harrison Ford, I suppose...

Hard to say, but if you put a gun to my head, I might say Jeff Bridges. He can be funny, tough, he's got that great voice...I love Eastwood, but I don't really buy him as a three-dimensional character in most of his roles, more of a "type." I could say the say thing about Mifune, who would also make my top five list. But I really buy Jeff Bridges most of the time.

Sadly, he hasn't been in a lot of movies I've really liked, but I'm trying to seperate that from the actor for the sake of the exercise...

I couldn't agree more. He becomes the character and doesn't seem to carry mannerisms over from one to another.

The thing is, you've named two actors who take very different approaches to their craft.

There are actors like Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jack Nicholson (to an extent), etc., who have created a specific on-screen "persona" (for lack of a better term)--and fans go to see their movies expecting to see that character.

Then there are actors like Jeff Bridges, Gary Oldman, Kate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Sean Penn, etc., who create completely new characters for each movie, then inhabit those characters so well that they (the actors) almost disappear within those characters.

To me, neither approach is right or wrong, and I enjoy performances by actors from both groups. But I truly marvel at those actors in the second group who have that ability to become someone who is often completely different from their real selves, and maintain that flawlessly throughout an entire filming schedule.

Back to the main topic, there are so many actors whose work I appreciate that I couldn't possibly choose only one, or even narrow it down to a manageable list.
