Who builds sabers anymore?

Here's my new ROTJ work in progress, using a larbel ( I think?) replica base, real Graflex guts, some of Kenny's parts and some other sourced/scratchbuilt bits:

Nice TPM Plo Koon saber. Is that a solid machined pipe, or a hollow tube?

Vader'74 - do I see wooden grips on one of your sabers? If so, then that's a pretty cool idea. Any larger shots of it?
[/b]

Yes, the grip is Cocobolo rubbed down with Tung Oil. Grip is one piece with lengthwise milled grooves (Flathead brass screws are just for looks). Center of grip has a quarter inch bore for a threaded rod. It is one of my favorite. I really liked the idea of wood, brass, and aluminum in one saber.

That Plo Koon is actually PVC pipe with balsa wood grips.
I painted it with some auto chrome paint I had in the shop..

I used JediFathers tutorial for that saber.
the tutorial can be found here.

Wow, you had me fooled, I didn't know PVC could look that good. That saber is fairly straightforward, so I can see why PVC is the popular choice. And I've seen that tutorial before. It's very accurate, as he based it off the Hasbro sketch, which should be the main source. I plan to make a yellow luxeon with it, and if that's not possible, just a simple stunt saber with the rod painted yellow.

Here's a few of my customs...they're a couple years old now...mostly hardware, though a couple are machined.
Newer ones in the months to come...

I recognize that first saber from Luuke's last design contest. Very Nice.

In the 2nd picture, what did you use for the tube of the third saber from the left?

It was an older sink tube actually...I found only the one and held on to it waiting for just the right idea for it.
I call it my Obi-Graflex.
Used one of those "other type" red buttons.
I have a Graflex Eye I'll add to it one of these days...

I come and go from those projects, but I ideally prefer to build rather than buy - I have enough projects and little enough time, though, that there's an appeal to aquiring MR sabers that are 'done' out of the box.

In my WIP stack is an Episode IV Obi, an ROTJ Graflex-based Vader, a Praco-based Yoda, and finishing up kits of Yun and Kyle sabers from Dark Forces (obviously THOSE have been backlogged for a while.) I have a few fan-produced pieces that need a lot of work before they're displayable, as well.

If I ever find that I'm through those, I want to start a Dark Forces Sarriss...

What constitutes a build? All of my sabers are fan-made.

I've added Blast-tech and found parts to Parks and Larbel flash tubes. Painted/polished a few unfinished customs to my liking. Even bought a few finished customs that were beyond my abilities. Only thing I've actually "built" were the grips on my Yoda saber.

I've yet to build a hardware saber since I only want replicas of the movie sabers. I have most of the pieces to build a Vader ROTJ and an idea for a custom. Just don't have the machinery to complete them.

I would love to build an Obi Wan ANH or a Luke or Vader-but I have no skills and even less patience. I have seen some phenomenal pieces by members, including Oz, his stuff is the best I have seen, especially the Maul. If there were kits that came with all the pieces i would give it a try.

I still dig the hell out of the guts you came up with for your Vader, Derek. :)

I've got a Bolsey and a Praco I've had collecting dust for turning into VD yoda's and misc graflex parts with a kenny midband/control box and port plug waiting to become a Vader ROTJ. Otherwise, I've kind of lost the saber bug and have moved on to other props. Firefly, Blade Runner BSG, Phasers, etc.

About the only MR I have are the mini's. Nothing against MR, just for the $, there are too many other things I'd rather get.

I've only ever made 1 scratchbuilt saber and that was years ago.

Sporak- I'm not usually big on the custom Graflex styles, but that rocks. reminds me of something along the lines of the old Fantastic Films version.

Here's mine...

The machining and assembly was lots of fun. It's documented Here. Pic Intensive.

And yes, in answer to the thread, I plan to keep building sabers.

Nice work. Reminds me of the one from the old ANH movie poster. One of these days i'll get around to building a custom.
