Where to get parchment? / Gladiator poster prop

Does anyone know where I can get some large sheets of parchment paper? Preferably from a place that has a brick and mortar store. I'm trying to make one of these posters from Gladiator, but I'm having trouble finding paper that matches and is large enough (should be about 11.5" x 15.5"). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Where to get parchment?

Do you want real parchment or paper that looks like parchment?
Laffo.

Re: Where to get parchment?

Either would be fine, probably. I plan on making a stencil and painting it as opposed to printing, so whichever would take that the best, I suppose.

Re: Where to get parchment?

You should be able to get it in any large craft store, though you'll probably have to spritz it with lemon juice and/or tea and let it bake in the oven for a while to get the color. Most of the large pieces of parchment sold are just bright white.

No, that's completely untrue. You can get parchment in any shade if it's paper parchment and not skin. Kinko's has four different colors for sale. It's bad, but it's parchment.

Here's the real stuff:

And 13x19 - .50 a sheet:

These guys are the best:

Their Parchment paper looks and feels, and even is translucent like the real thing in 14 colors:

Stinky,

Not sure if they have exactly what you seek, but you might try Archivers at Mall of Georgia Crossing.

Re: Where to get parchment?

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. That papyrus looks perfect, but it looks like I'd have to order at least 10 sheets of it, and that might get a little pricey at about $5/sheet. I'll search around for some more papyrus and let you know if I find anything cheaper. Otherwise, I'll probably get some of that stuff from frenchpaper. That's a great site, thanks for the link, Laffo!

~Edit: I just found this site that's got packs of 12 sheets in the size I need for $24. I just might get some from them.. http://www.kingtutshop.com/Sheets/PSheets.htm

and a huge selection of paper and papurus on hand

Re: Where to get parchment?

you might also try you every day grocery store. They have whats called "baking parchement" in the same aisle as tin foil. Got a roll, 15 inches wide, by 24 feet for less than $5. It will still need the aging and coloring done to it, but its a good cheap start.

Re: Where to get parchment?

Thanks for the link. I just bought a 50 sheet pack of the aged parchment 13 x 19. I will let you know how it looks.

Re: Where to get parchment?

If you got from French Paper, it's beautiful. Those guys are the House Industries of Paper Companies.

Re: Where to get parchment?

I just got my paper from French Papers and it is very nice. I got the Super B sized aged parchment and it is translucent like vellum, and looks like parchment. I can't wait to try and "age" it more and see how it looks.

Re: Where to get parchment?

Hey Stinky.. try Binders in Buckhead too.. they carry large single sheets of most art papers..
Nice prop idea BTW..

Re: Where to get parchment?

Awesome, glad the parchment turned out nice, PhoenixVader. Question for you: based on the screenshot in the first post do you think the paper you got would be a good match at least weight and texture-wise (I'm not sure what color you got)

Also, thanks for the local suggestions too. I've got some time now, so hopefully I can head over and check them out.

Finally, in case any of you are interested in making one of these yourself, I tried my hand at recreating the poster a few weeks ago. The total size of the paper should be 15.5" x 11.5". Not sure how printing would turn out... I was just planning on making stencils. Anywho, here it is. Any comments and criticism would be great. (oh, and I know there are some dark spots missing on the left dude's face and the right dude's leg.. I'll post a new image when I fix that)
