Where to get leather straps??

Hey, folks. I need the help of smarter and more experienced proppers on this.

I have been EXTREMELY frustrated in my inability to find replacement leather straps for things.

Like a black leather shoulder strap for my scratch-build ST:TOS tricorder.

Belt blanks are too short, if you search "replacement leather straps" online you get almost nothing but guitar straps or watch straps. I looked at Indy shoulder bag straps, but they're all wrong for a tricorder. :angry

So where do I go? Is there a better way to search?

My thanks in advance for your guidance and recommendations!

Try here-

Luggage & Handbag Supply Co. Contact: Luggage & Handbag Supply Co., 248 East Arrow Highway, San Dimas, CA 91773-3359, Telephone: (909) 394-1213 or (909) 394-1220.

I know they have some ready made straps, and some other pre-sewn strap material by the foot. Ask for a catalog too- they have all kinds of cool buckles and clasps too!

Good Luck!

Saddle and western shops often have tons of leather for saddle repair, straps, belts, bridles, etc. and some have "distressed" leather. They also have some very cool buckles, fittings, etc.

A leather dog leash will work :):thumbsup
They come in very long lengths and several sizes and you can cut and color them how you like at a reasonable price.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions.

In terms of time and effort, I'm looking for something ready-made, or at least already black. I've had some bad experiences with self-dyed leather leeching color onto costumes, especially when they get moist from perspiration (even cheap belts will do that!).

I'll look into some of these things.

Any other suggestions welcomed! Something East Coasty would be nice, as I'm in the NYC area! :)

Thanks again!

Rick
