Where did MR get info on the Vader ROTS saber?

From what lightsaber did MR design its Darth Vader ROTS lightsaber? Is it an original design loosely based on other sabers like the Anakin TCW and ROTS being shaped by the Vader ANH and the Graflex model in ANH? Some have said that it is based loosely on the Barbican saber. Where did that one come from?

It's based on the ROTJ & Barbacon lightsaber. They turned it into a unique design in order to have another lightsaber to market from.

Are we sure about that? Even though it doesn't appear in the movie, the promotional photos clearly show Vader holding a saber which could very much be the RotS design released by MR.

I'm sure Vader is holding it as a promo for the movie and MR. It just wasn't a good selling saber though. Too little air time. It's too bad that Lucas with MR didn't make a better transition saber for the Vader ROTS one looking more like the ANH Vader saber and the Anakin ROTS saber looking more like the ANH saber given to Luke. Not to mention the Obi Wan ROTS saber being soooo different than the one in ANH. Where in the movies did the Barbican saber come from? Is it even seen in the movie?

The Vader ROTS saber was built by the prop dept for ROTS.
MR had nothing to do with it's design.
Lucasfilm gave them one of these original ROTS props to measure and examine for the replica.

The prop dept in Australia had many original saber props on hand when designing the sabers for ROTS including the Barbican which the ROTS Vader is heavily influenced by.

The Barbican is probably a ESB or ROTJ era saber. It was likely used even though we can't "see" in the movie (like many other props we don't even know about).

I hope you don't mind if I quote you.

The Vader ROTS saber, as Chris correctly said, existed and was worn by Vader in the last scene of the movie while watching the beginning of construction on the Death Star.

The prop was wielded by Vader in all of the publicity shots prepared by LFL for release of Revenge of the Sith. It is quite apparent on all the standees that were around in every store, Blockbuster and Boarders etc. MR were given access to the prop to replicate without knowing if it would be in seen in the movie or not.

That was my guess. LFL designed it, knowing that if seen on screen, like most of the sabers it would be barely visiable.

Why use a different saber? Why not? If you can tell me that you can actually that you can see the difference between the sabers (from movie to movie) on screen and that you don't know the differences b/c of all the reference material, MR releases and the internet I'll tell you you're full of crap.

Not that I like the design, mind you. Since I didn't see it on screen and pretty much all I see in the publicity photos is the shroud and something in the shape of Vader's saber, I pretend that horrible design that was used didn't exist.
