someone out there did a REALLY good blog about accurizing and building the FM Falcon.

anyone still have a link for it at all?

a Japanese dude making things unnecessarily and overly complex for himself.

Maybe for you,but this guy is a true artist of his craft! He's making complex assemblies from tiny bits, and bobs of metal, and not resin copied crap. Even if you can't read Japanese, you can still see that some of the photos are out of order, and that he realised the irony of what he was doing, and used a master to make photoetched parts from. He obviously wanted a model of a much higher quality than what's available on the open market, rather than settle for "whatever". I don't know why you're knocking him. This guy's a modeling genius - especially on this level, and scale! My hat's off to him,as he's doing what most of us only dream of doing. Anyone here who says they don't is either a liar,or a fool!

Here - this too, might help out in the way of the falcon:

That is just completely insane, and for all intents and purposes, pointless. At that scale, the difference between brass and plastic parts will be negligible.

And I bet he still doesn't correct the few geometry issues that really mess with the look of FM model.

Wonder if he will taper the escape pods? Doesn't look like it.

Or correct the cockpit canopy which is too long? Or correct the size o the dish, which is too small? Or taper the turret walls? Doesn't look like it.

You know, sounds like I'm angry or jealous or something. I'm not. Its just frustrating seeing so much work going into areas that won't make that big of a difference in the overall appearance. he should spend more time correcting the shape of the ship instead.

And boy - after all this work, I hope he can paint!

I agree - its a matter of "to each their own". For me, I guess its a matter of priorities. This guy probably thinks I'm nuts for drawing crazy lines all over a silly grey ball!

By the way, this is Dana's (QuartZ) build. He and I worked side by side on our FM MFs for a year or so. We got to completing the top side of our models, and Dana was working on the Dish.

At that point, other things came up. Other hobby projects, and life events. My own model hasn't been touched since, and sits on my work bench, top done (and yellowing under the clear coat), bottom painted but not weathered.

It was truly amazing watching this paint job come to be right before my very eyes. Dana's paint finish is truly, hands-down the best Falcon paint job I've ever seen, Studio Scale included.

This thread brings back good memories. Hope all is well with QuartZ. Miss working on such projects...

LOL, now you know why I built mine OOB. ;) The detail being added in that Japanese build also changes many of the shapes of the basic assemblies. In a sense, it is almost no longer a Falcon. But, at least we can enjoy the eye candy and the effort being spent on it.

Dana's model indeed looks very nice. When you get to practically nailing the paintjob, the results can just be stunning! It is a very nice miniature!

He and I did a boat load of mods the the stock kit:
--Notching the edges
--Adding missing detailing on the left side of the center box (between the mandibles
--Adding missing detail on the turret walls, and the "sheild" in front of the upper gun
--Tapering the turret walls
--Tapering the "escape pods" (mine, not Dana's)
--Rebuilding the canopy (mine, not Dana's)
--And more that I can't recall off the top of my head

But it all comes down to the paint job. On mine, I can safely say I duplicated all the weathering elements to about 95% - 98% accuracy, but my own paint job just doesn't blend or flow like Dana's.

Even yours, JMC - though in photos appears less detailed in weathering than mine - seems to flow better, and look more natural.

Dana's is amazing though. And its weird - in person, it doesn't look quite the same as in the photo above. Its slightly more "showy"; colors are more rich, less earthy. But Dana is a master with color, and also with photography, and has an innate and expert sense of how color and photography coincide and interplay.

I forgot I also notched the edges on mine. It improved the looks quite a bit. If I ever get a chance to do another one of these, I may attempt the other fixes since I have a baseline to work with (so if I screw up, I still have my original Falcon model). :lol

One of the things I really love about being a member of the RPF now is I can look at and comment on some of this incredible eye candy I'm seeing. You guys have set the bar high and I hope to try and target for it with my future builds (BTW, Moonraker shuttle stack WIP shots are coming soon).

Just curious... was the corrected dish for the falcon done by Dana ever cast up and sold? Does anyone do a corrected sensor dish? This, by far, even more than the frickin' mandibles, bugs me!

Best,
Ken

Not to my knowledge. Regrettably, I haven't heard from him for quite some time. :unsure

Not sure if he cast it or not.

thanks...
He basically did what I was thinking had to be done to correct this. If you hear anything please let me know.

Best,
Ken
