Where are The Rest of the Firefly Props?

Thanks to robstyle, we know about Karl's amazing collection at fireflyarchive.com,
but what happened to a whole bunch of un-found Firefly props and costumes?
I'm thinking especially of things like the Alliance pins and patches, all the Independents' uniforms and gear,
the Niska suits that had the lapels removed, Jubal Early's costume, the hero costumes for the Serenity crew, etc.
I've noticed a lot of Firefly set dressing seemed to come from rental houses.
F'r'nstance, there is a HUGE dragon candle holder reputed to be from Inara's shuttle on eBay now,
that is supposed to be from a rental place.
I understand that all that stuff would go back when the show was cancelled.
But the Alliance hat pins, for example, would seem pretty specific to the Firefly show.
Where would items like that end up?
(and more importantly, why haven't I been able to get one, yet?)

Is it likely that the small items would go to rental places,
go home with the production folk or (HORRORS!) end up in the trash?

Just the other night I was cruising Ebay and someone had what was purported to be an Alliance Food Bar from the pilot. Or maybe it was cast directly from the actual prop.

It certainly looked good enough from memory to be the real deal.

I need to go to eBay more.
I can't find the food bar or the candle holder listings even now that I know they're out there.

The food bar is a replica. He thought it was a gold bar until I told him what it really was (he has never seen the show). But it's not one of the screen used ones. (The auction has already ended.)

I've been told a lot of the set dressing type stuff was actually just thrown away... Possibly rescued by production members, but it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of it is just gone.

I'd like to know where the River's crate is (the one Simon used to bring her on board in the pilot)... You wouldn't think something like that (and that big) would be thrown away or 'lost'... Might have been a rental item though.

Firefly prop master Randy Eriksen is quoted in the Firefly companion (vol 1, pg 36) as saying of River's box, "It's one piece I wish still existed." So, it sounds like it was dismantled. Damn shame! He also says it was designed specifically for the show.

The auction has already ended and I'm the one who purchased the food bar casting.
The auction said that it was pulled from the original molds.
If it wasn't, I paid about twice as much as a block of resin is worth, I guess.
Really, I'd like to make container for at least a top row of the things, but I know nothing about casting.
So, I'll just add the bar to my Mal display:

Rik,
I know who made the crate and know who watched it go into the dumpster. Its gone forever. Some people working on other productions went in a picked a little at the stages before the sets were torn down. Its taken lots of time, detective work help from friends and not to mention, LOTS of money to get the Firefly Archives where it is at. It also involved alot of dumb luck and happenstance. The owner of the items did what nobody else could do with nothing more to ask than people be allowed to view the items. Without him, items would forever be lost or in a landfill.

Many of the items on the show were rented while others came from Chinatown in LA and a cache of other items came from salvage yards in a lot purchase. What people often do not consider is people do a job, they get paid, they move on. Firefly was dead and buried and any possibly cache of items were unloaded so the people involved could move to the next project, repeat...

Again, the fact the archives has so many items available shows how much work went into securing the items. To anyone but a collector, the items are useless. As the saying goes, someone elses junk is anothers treasure...

I think maybe you need to learn about casting, or loan the dingus out to someone who already knows how.
(That's NOT me, btw, but I'd be interested in a third generation. Or even negatives so I could actually mold granola bars into that shape!)

Wouldn't that mean I'd be burned at the stake and reviled across the land as a recaster?
Or does the fact that the Alliance food bar is supposed to come from the original molds give me a pass?
I'm not interested in making any money off the thing;
I just want a dozen or so for myself and I don't care if everyone who wants one gets one.

I had the same thought about making a negative mold for making food;
that would be cool.

Search (on eBay)TV'S FIREFLY ASIAN STYLE DRAGON CANDLE HOLDER

and that should do it.
I have it in my watch list, but with a BIN of $687.50, I can't even consider it.
Hit, view "seller's other items" and type FIREFLY in the search box and 5 Firefly rental items will come up.
These items are from 20th Century Props, according to the seller.
I can't endorse the seller or the authenticity of the props, just passing on info.
(Although they have a screencap of Morena with the dragon candle holder in her shuttle.)
Some of the stuff is cool, but I can't place where it was used in the show.

In the case of the BDM "Serenity" it seems as tho' a couple of places like
The Propstore of London were able to buy up a lot of the props and costumes.

I admit it, I'm hottest for all the Alliance emblem-ology.
It just kills me to think of a dozen or more hat and uniform pins just going in the trash.
Sigh....

The common practice on this board is that things from an original mold or molded from screenused get a pass. I'm not commenting on the ethics of the question, or even the rules necessarily, but rather what frequently happens.

That said, I don't think the question is an easy one and there are a lot of things to think about before you touch resin to RTV. Like whether or not it was really original. Like whether or not the guy is making more castings. Like whether or not purchasing an original constitutes the "rights" to make castings. Etc. Etc.

Sorry. I was too 'I want one' to think about whatever the board rules are. (I never had reason to know before; I don't have anything to recast.)
I wouldn't want to see anyone reviled.

Floppy rubber negatives for real food bar makin's, though... Still want that.
