Hey guys,

I'm wondering what you guys might have found for the best prices on RTV silicon. I'm looking for a 1:1 mixture that doesn't need degassing.

Thanks everyone

Re: Where re the best prices for RTV silicon

Best two companies i have used are "Smooth-On", and "Silicones, Inc.". As for degassing, can't really get away from that. As you mix the two parts together, you will inherently stir in air bubbles. You can minimize the effect of them by first "painting" you mold/ plug with a thin coat of the rubber before pouring. The , pour the mixture in a this stream so as to "tear" the bubbles loose as you fill the mold.

If it fits inside your pressurepot, you can also let the silicone cure under pressure. I do this with 5 bars of pressure and i can use the molds for pressure casting resin then

I highly agree with this tip.. I don't have a chamber for degassing so painting
a thin coat first then as suggested pouring in a thin slow stream works great
at insuring a good mold.. If you don't need a particularly strong mold I would
Suggest OoMoo by Smooth-on.com it has a very thin consistancy compare to
the other Silicones I've tried, It's not the strongest, but get's the job done if
you need a simple mold..

Smooth-On, Polytek. Sil-Pak and Silicones Inc are the best places. As for price, I think Sil-Pak has the best with the "econo-sil". It is great for cheap molds that you are going to use sooner and get about 20-50 pulls from depending on surface detail and release agent. And as for no degassing, you will need to high pour which is a PITA but works.

Cheers,
Jeff
