When will we see the Rocketeer on BluRay?

Yeah, it was sandwiched between Prince of Thieves and T2. Costner was riding a high point in his career after Dances with Wolves which helped the publicity for Prince of Thieves and then of course T2 was obviously a big, big hit that summer. It didn't have much of a chance at the box office with those two as competition even though it got plenty of good reviews.

The movie poster was definitely much nicer than the more generic floating heads with an explosion that they used for the video poster. One of the Iron Man posters is nearly a mirror image of the Rocketeer video poster... but then there are probably more than a few of that same sort out there.

Who knows, maybe if Johnston is really succesful with bringing Captain America to the screen, perhaps a revival of the Rocketeer could happen.
If they wanted to keep a sequel in the same time period though, sadly, Billy Campbell would have to be recast. Too much time has passed for the same actors to return - though Campbell did have a special charm that is going to be crucial to emulate.
Comic book adaptations are huge right now. I really hope we haven't seen the last of the Rocketeer.

i would love to see a remake Rocketeer!!!!!!!

image what some CGI could do...

several scenes in Ironman struck up rocketeer memories to me

wasn't disney working on a sequel? i remember some talk here a while back about a member having a copy of the script. there was a sequence involving nazi rocketeers or something...

They told Billy Campbell and Dave stevens that they wanted to do a trilogy, but after the poor performance at the box office. It was cancelled.

No script was ever produce for a sequel.

However, in a interview, Dave Steven's said Cliff's New York Adventure was suppose to be the sequel to the disney movie.

Much as I'd enjoy seeing more Rocketeer, I have to ask: why a remake?

And I fail to see how CGI would've helped all that much with the original film. Granted, it's been a while since I watched it, but my recollection is that the f/x in that were perfectly fine. I could see maybe cleaning up some of the composite shots, but otherwise, what would CGI add to it except exchanging one version of "looks kinda fake" for another?

How about the "Son of the Rocketeer"? ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if Disney did try to do a remake at some point and, who knows, I might even like it... but not unless they managed to do it without crapping all over the original or turning it into some kind of G.I.Joe sort of film travesty.

Good point. I'm ALL for seeing a female Rocketeer. Hmmm... I'm thinking maybe Evan Rachel Wood... I dunno. For whatever reason, I've also always liked Kiera Knightley. Regardless, I definitely think a form fitting costume would be in order though. :love

Sorry, but there WAS a script written for a sequel. It was developed by the same exec who did the first film during the time the movie was in preproduction and production. I actually had the stupid thing in my hands and used to pull it from the "dead" script shelf every lunch break. I've asked around Disney and two of the people who still work there said they remember being told to save everything from the film because the sequel was to shoot months after the first movie's completion. Ted Elliott also read the script back in 94 while he was working on something else - he pulled it from William Morris, thinking it was an open writing assignment, but no - it had been dead for while. He and I have both been searching for a copy and we'll find one one day.

From what I read there were Nazi Rocketeers called "Skycutters" who had rocketpacks as well as weapons attached to their shoulders - Hughes develops a team of Rocketeer flyers to fight them - lead by Cliff.

It's been over 15 years since I read this thing - I wasn't allowed take it home - I was working in mail room then and would visit the script archives and look through all the stuff that was never made, not just by Disney. I could dismiss this script as some fan fic submission that people do send in - but it was marked by blue pages and earlier green, showing it was something in development - Also, when I returned to Disney as a writer, I asked about the script - a few people knew what I was talking about and I was told it was put together by the same executive, his belief that the Rocketeer would be huge, he would be let go sometime during pre-production on part 2, but his early development of the screenplay would guarantee certain wages when the sequel came out.
Also, Ted telling me the script was on file at William Morris shows the writer was probably reped there

It is a crying shame. Rocketeer is such a gorgeous movie and really deserved a sequel. Maybe even "Sky Captain VS The Rocketeers"

I don't know. We were discussing that in another thread. As far as I know Disney still has all the film rights. I'm assuming Dave retained rights for publishing comics but of course, he passed on a while back. I have absolutely no clue if he left whatever rights he may have kept to any family or friends after his death.

I was just reading an interview of Dave Stevens and I seem to remember him saying he got royally screwed in the deal with Disney, basically giving the rights away for almost nothing with the promise of making his money on merchandising - toys, bedsheets, etc. So there's probably a good chance Disney owns The Rocketeer film rights forever.

I suspect the main reason Disney hasn’t done a Blu-ray yet is because they feel the need to a deluxe release loaded with extras, kind of like what Universal did with Back to the Future. They probably also wanted Joe Johnston involved, and while he seems to have changed his tune recently, hasn’t always been the biggest fan of Disney. I'm all for bonus features, but they could have gotten my money twice if they had just released the movie years ago.
