whats your favourite plaster for molds??

Hi all, Im interested in this question, specifffically for my current project, but generally also for future projects also.

currently I am sculpting an Ood head, which at this stage I plan on making a latex mask.

Hmm well, I havent been able to work out how to contact the mods, and I deem to have been moved to replica movie props, not replica costumes!!

As mentioned, Hydrocal is a good material. I also like Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty, it sets up very hard and is easy to work with. I've used it to make vacform bucks, and it should be great for molds too. You'll find it in hardware stores, near putties and Spackle.

On the TV show "Face Off" they were using something that looked great. Sets super hard overnight and is ready to pour, even latex, right away.

Anybody know what that material is?

You could try Crystacal plaster - they sell it here in Ireland so it probably originates from the UK.

For slip casting latex I always prefer Ultracal 30. Good detail and strength. You have plenty of working time before it kicks, but once it does it sets up quickly. It's also pretty inexpensive.

Thanks guys, I've had a look into crystacal, it's £10 plus another £10 p+p for 5kg or a 90 minute trip to the nearest store where you can get 75kg for £25

I've no idea how much I need or what a reasonable price is?? Any help with that??

Re Ultracal, we can't get that here at all, and postage from US is way too much, thanks though. All input is really appreciated

fine casting or herculite is available over here, i use both, work great for latex mask making, you can also use dental stone, bit heavy duty just for masks

Ultracal is a hobby product, very popular in model train shops. Surely the UK shops have something similar?

Thanks Rob, but I have hunted high and low, but no UK sales it seems. I have tracked down a reasonably priced herculite, though, so I'm going to go with that
