What's the difference between Mal's Firefly and Serenity pistols?

Question: What exactly are the differences between the pistol Mal uses in Firefly and the one he uses in Serenity?

From what I've learned, the Serenity model has a different ammo clip and additional greeblies on the side... as well as a different paint job I believe.

The magazine is a different shape:

Serenity: (QMX Proto shot)

Other than that I dunno the subtle difference but I'm sure someone else does :)

[EDIT] One random question I have though... Is the color of the Firefly version Silver or the aged Gold? It looks silver to me. But people get all uppity when they notice that I painted mine silver insted of gold. :p

Well, I don't know how much truth there is to it, but one of the stories I've heard is that the Serenity pistol is an actual Firefly pistol with additional greeblies (like the clip)...but it had been so worn down in the interim that all the aging had worn off, showing the original brass metal underneath.

Also, might want to ask Philippes. He's made several incredible replicas of the Firefly pistol, all of them (to my knowledge) made of brass. I believe he's had access to an original, too, so that seems trustworthy...

Maybe it's just my aging eyes, but whenever I watch Firefly Mal's gun seems to be a very glossy black with just a hint of aging/weathering. :confused

As I recall, the actual hero pistol from Firefly was modified for Serenity. The main body and barrel are made of bronze, and "blued" (anodized or oxidized or whatever it is they do with guns to make them blue-black). The trigger guard and associated parts were steel since they are what's left of the real revolver underneath.

While filming the show, I assume some of the blue wore off and when Serenity came along, perhaps they just decided to buff it clean.

Didn't "rub" it off most of the color came off while molding it to make the "new" stunt models. According to the Serenity and Firefly Companion books.

My understanding is that in addition to the magazine and finish, there are several other differences including a "thumbswitch" on the adjustable sight (you can see it in the pic above), a sort of metal-plate slider on the right side, and, I believe small things like more bolts. But I could be wrong...

Someone posted pictures of the Firefly and Serenity versions side by side once... can't remember who though. The magazine/clip is different on the Serenity version, more stylized, imo... and there is an added piece to the right side side-panel and more screws and a visible hammer... at least on some.

I'm no expert though...

Sweet. I have two more saved... one showing the pistols from above and one of the detail on the right side of the guns, though... I don't know if I should post them... ain't exactly my pictures.

From what I can see, on the Serenity model they bulked up the right side panel and they added a spring to the sight. As for the color, the FF one retained a gun bluing which was applied to the brass plates on the Taurus, on the Serenity one, they wore off most of the gun bluing so that the brass underneath would shine through.
