What will be "those" movies for this generation

As I look at my little guy (18 months) I think about what the future holds for him. I think about how I'll have to tell him that until I was in highschool we had no Internet and how if we wanted music we went to these places called "malls" that had "record stores". But last night I was thinking about what movies will be classics to his generation.

Now by classics, I'm not talking Citizen Kane or Casablanca. I'm talking those movies that it seems every young male from my generation holds near and dear. Some examples would be Caddyshack, Stripes, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Superman, etc.

Do you see any movies out there now or from the last few years, that in 20 years or so our kids will hold just as dear?

I can't really think of any.

I think that has a lot more to do with how culture is consumed these days. The breakneck pace at which new stuff comes out kind of tends to overshadow the old stuff, to the point where "old" itself is redefined. "Old" could mean something like "from 5 years ago," given the speed at which things come out. This is why you see reboots happening every 5-10 years or so.

In such an environment it's that much harder for really good movies to be taken in by people, let alone be raised to "classic" status.

Well, I've a sad suspicion that the "classic comedies" for the next generation will include Anchorman, The Hangover, and other toilet humor tripe.

I'm not trying to be a wise azzzzz, but based on your criteria aren't you kind of asking for foresight of things we don't yet know? :)

I just mean that if your little guy is only 18 months, the movies that might possibly make a lasting impression on him and become 'those' movies are going to be ones he personally experiences firsthand at, say.....ages 5-15 or 5-18?

We don't yet know what those will be. :)

Well I was born in 76 but didn't see most of those movies until I was well into my teens. So it's possible that movies today will be like that for him.

I could see Anchorman and the Hangover being in there. Didn't think about those. Anchorman was one I hated, but after catching bits and pieces of here and there I'm starting to like.

A lot of the 80s movies have toilet humor too: Police Academy, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Ghostbusters, Weird Science, Goonies, Caddy Shack, Airplane, Porkys. I guess not to the extreme of the She-male scene in Hangover II or saying "****" as the joke in Step Brothers.

Possible Cult classic comedies: Superbad, Knocked up, Hot Rod (limited Fan base), Napoleon Dynamite, Rushmore, Moonrise Kingdom, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, End of the world (maybe), Jay and seth vs the apocalypse (maybe), Hangover III (maybe),
Clerk 2 & 3 (maybe), Super Troopers, Beer Fest, Super Troopers 2 (maybe), Pick of Destiny (limited fan cult status), Dodgeball, Wedding Crashers, Cabin in the Woods, Scary Movie 1 & 2, The Room (ironically), Pineapple Express, American Pie, Zombieland, Hot Tub Time Machine 1 & 2 (maybe), Evil Dead 4 (If it goes the campy b-movie route), Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Goon, Kill Bill 1 & 2, Kill Bill 3 (Maybe), Inglourious basterds, Django Unchained, Black Dynamite, Ant Man 2015 (Maybe), Midnight In Paris,

Probably Family classic comedies: Toy Story 3, Up, The Incredibles, Brave (Maybe), Walle, Rush Hour 2, Elf, Oceans 11, The Lone Ranger 2013 (maybe), Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure 3 (probably yes), Pirates of the Caribbean, Ghostbusters 3 (maybe)

How far back are we talking? Like the last 5 years? If so then I would say:
Edge of Tomorrow
Guardians of the galaxy
Wolf of wall street
Django unchained
Mad Max Fury Road
John Wick

I don't think there will be any comedies that are any good from this generation. The last comedy that truly made me laugh was The Big Lebowski and that was 97. Comedies have taken a huge dive since the 80's. The best "comedies" nowadays are probably Wes Anderson movies, but they aren't really like regular comedies anyways.

I agree with Solo4114 on this. Media has become very disposable. A big movie opens and plays for a few weeks then vanishes, comes out on DVD/BD in a couple of months, and within a year is played on TV ad nauseam until your sick of of seeing it as you flip pass it. And then it get rebooted in a few years. In contrast, when Star Wars came out, it was in theaters for frik'n year with big full page ads in the newspaper touting its 40th SMASH week. The entire ecosystem has changed.

Sadly for kids these days classics are all going to be giant stinking turds unless parents introduce them to older films. I plan on introducing my friends' kids to all the movies and tv shows we grew up with: Transformers, GI joe, Garbage pale kids, Last Starfighter and the like. It's up to us to make sure kids remember and appreciate the past and don't turn into vapid zombies who think that the swill being put out these days is the best ever.

But the tv being put out today is leaps better than anything from the past barring the twilight zone. Breaking Bad, True Detective, Better Call Saul, Dexter, Louie, The Walking Dead, and The Sopranos. There aren't tons of great kids shows, but most people don't return to those when they're older.

Not sure it works like that anymore.
Like others said,
Star Wars for instance was in theaters a year, and lines around the theater.
No internet, no home video release in three months, no instant satisfaction,
It's on to the next hyped thing which is always a month or two away.
I suspect it will be a more personal level, some films will connect strongly as always with certain people.
The masses just roll onto the next pop thing.

have you looked at CN/Disney lately ??? that crap is MIND NUMBING as in SHAMALAN-ESQUE

im sorry but i grew up on shows that had 22 eps or more ( ds9) im used to a standard ok ...
they cancelled GL/TRON/GENERATOR REX/CHOWDER and a lot of good shows and left us with GARBAGE ...but the only savior so far has been NICK cus they are doing childhood right ( except for the fairly odd live movies , WTF was that crap about) .

they canceled tron 3 for god knows what and the sw franchise has me worried since HERR MAUS dragged everything SW related into its clutches and removed all the hard work of Dark horse and writers (eu etc) from official history becasuse they could . so SW has lost any hope from my pov

It's probably going to be really frustrating for you when the vast majority of the SW fanbase likes the new movies.

Disney kids's cartoons/etc are not representative of what they will do with the ST.

I don't have faith in Disney's commitment to quality. I have faith in their commitment to maximizing their long-term profits. They didn't just dump $4 billion dollars into SW so they could waste its existing popularity on a bunch of high-profile disappointing movies right out of the gate.

They might cut corners all over SW when it comes to half-hour cartoon shows or whatever. But they will want the next "big 3" theatrical flicks to be as good as possible.
