What were your favourite cinematic scenes of 2009?

Carl pushing the items from his house in "Up."

In the moment he must internally release himself from the bonds of his dedication to the perceived desires of his dead wife, he too must literally release the contents of his symbolic home in order to progress the plot. Brilliant. Brilliant visual storytelling.

All of District 9.

No ****, I loved every second of that show.

But if I have to single out a moment, it would be when Wikus catches the RPG (you know the one, as it was used in nearly all the trailers and spots). I was lucky enough to attend a screening at the Embassy -- a screening introduced by PJ, no less -- which was full of people who were pretty freakin' excited to be seeing it before the rest of the world. We were laughing for the first couple of reels, gasping for the next few, then cheering and hollering during the last act. But I clearly remember that said moment, how there was complete silence when that sequence started, then the audience erupting when he reached up and caught the RPG. I'm talking popcorn flying through the air (which was free, by the way), people standing in their seats... you know, pandemonium. Without a doubt, one of the most memorable cinematic moments in a long, long time. It was beat-****ing-perfect, that's why. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it is absolute magic.

I loved the 'alternate ending' of INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS greatly but the beginning of UP was astonishing. I actually cried by way of a cartoon.

I'd have to go with Avatar. The wide angle shots of the landscapes look gorgeous, not to mention the amount of layering that went into every shot of that movie. Cameron introduced us to an alien planet/world far better than anyone has done recently.

I'd have to say it's between the opening sequence of Up, and the opening sequence of The Hurt Locker.

I didn't really like The Hurt Locker overall, but the opening scene was amazing. The tension was intense, and the final explosion was a pretty visceral experience. It's a shame the rest of the movie didn't live up to the first scene.

I agree. Maybe it was the fact that I saw it in Imax 3-D, but it was amazing visually. It has been a very long time (Star Wars 1977-when I saw it at age 3), that a movie has wowed me like that:thumbsup.

t2 was such a abortion of a movie but i loved the scene that introduces optimus, he drops from the plane, transformers and deploys a chute to slow himself down, cuts away the chutes and transformers back to the truck on the highway.

and almost every scene in avatar.

Yeah. Sadly Avatar will get the awards, but District 9 had more heart and a hell of a lot more original ideas than Avatar.

****ing "Dances with Smurfs."

The end of Star Trek when Chris Pine finally pulls out a Shatner-ish impression when he says 'Bones'.
Very gratifying.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - IMAX version, extended forest battle, where Optimus Prime takes on 3 Decepticons and giving Starscream a headbutt. Prime is my hero!!
