I'm looking for some type of plastic that can get turned down or shaped as needed. I need 3" dia and 4" dia to get wheels for my B9 robot. A guy where I worked stays in touch and he told me he could turn the material into the shape I need to make the wheels. I just need something that will take paint and is cheap real as I'm out of work right now. Added a drawing of what I want to make in my second post.

Thanks

Well, sintra is really cheap. Styrene is cheap as well. You could try buying a for sale sign from home depot, that should be big enough for the size you need.

Most plastics that are cheap don't machine worth a damn... You would be better off making a single master and molding the rest it in resin if you want to save money...

You will find Delrin is one of the best plastics for machining but it's not cheap, in fact it's about twice the cost of aluminum...

A one foot length of 4.5" Delrin rod (leaves room to true it up to 4") is about $163...

For that price you can probably find someone to machine it out of aluminum, since an equal size rod of aluminum is half that price...

Another option is casting resin as it machines pretty well, a slug of it could be cast under pressure to avoid air bubble and then the parts machined from that, this is probably the cheapest route if you want to go plastic...

Thanks got a call into Total Plastic now to see what they can do for me!
Thanks for the info!:thumbsup

I would nt get Delrin. the paint will peel off after a few days,. even with an Adhesion promoter.

Why not just PVC , you can machine it, and very easy to paint. heres apic of some PVC machined gun barrels.

and its cheaper than aluminum. and the plastics supply house should have it in stock.

us plastics have a few policies i disagree with but they are cheap real cheap
and they didnt use to have a minimum
your machinist should be able to get it for you with minimal markup
when i machined full time i made my money on machine time not material mark up
good luck
