Hey. I'm just curious as to what type of Mold this is?
I've never seen one like this before..

Cheers!

It looks to be a 2 part mold except that they have made the mold inside wood frames. There is no keys or registration points because the two halves are hinged. Not sure how well it would seal though and it would have to be clamped.

As far as I gather, its a solid cast though. The only way I could think this possible is if there was some small supports for the lower half of the prop to sit on, to give it room around it for the silicone. Then the hole which the resin goes through is on the upper half after having both sides clamped tight.

Buuuuut, I could be completely wrong xD.

I guess they used wood to cut down on using a ton of silicon, but if the hinges had any play it would distort the finish, but I suppose it would only be flashing that could be sanded off.

I'm thinking like with poured metal molds there is an injection point on the bottom face of one of the halves. It appears on the stock there might be two areas where the injection might occur and it appears there are some vents for air toward the "barrel" of the gun.

It's mighty strange. In the absence of any injection points, you'd have to fill both halves of the mould to the brim with resin and leave it to start the curing process (when it starts to thicken up slightly) before slamming the two halves together! I would also feel much better if the two halves WEREN'T hinged together! If they were bolted together, at least that would align the two halves AND clamp them together.

I don't recognise this gun, any idea where/what it's from? Is it a prop or a display model? The main "barrel" would be solid resin. The join between the butt and the main part of the gun is quite skinny, if this was a prop, I wouldn't think it would last all that long on set, one slap and it's gone!!

Its a laser rifle from the game fallout 3-4

Maybe the air holes & pouring point is underneath the molded gun in that pic. The left side stays down, the right side slams shut on top of it, and the stuff goes in from the top.

This seems like a huge headache to make this mold anyway.. Just to make an easier life casting it. Was just curious is all as I'm sure a few others have been.

Looks cool though. Almost like a reverse han solo in carbonite xD

From his deviantart page where he posted this pic:

"I've made gun foam and fibreglass versions from this. With foam you mix it first, pour it into each side then slam it shut and clamp it. With fibregalss, it's just a case of laying up each side nice and neat then mixing a chop-strand paste and covering the seam on both sides, then same thing, slam it and clamp it. It leaves a bit of a seam to trim but not too much."

Ive seen similar moulds like this made strictly for fiberglass or other layout material work but the hinges, to me, would seem like a hindrance more than anything. But what works for one person may not for another.
