what type of material to use for costume part

Hello Master costume makers.
I was wondering if anyone had any type of advice on what material to use to make flexible costume parts. Namely, the shorts that C-3po wears in the movies after ANH. The original costume shorts were vac-formed ABS or something to that nature. They were changed to a rigid, yet flexible material for the subsequent films. I was researching Dragon Skin as a possibility. How well does it hold up? Will it breakdown over time? Also, there is the plating, Chroming process to consider. Will Dragonskin take the spray-chome? Thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated. The 3po buliders will appreciate this immensely.

Dragon Skin is used for molding if I am not mistaken... I lot of people used flexible foam flooring like this Best Step Anti-Fatigue Foam Floor Mat, Diamond | Canadian Tire and then hot glue it together, coat it with a hardener like plasti dip then paint it.
