thinking about making a replica sword of omens, but stuck with how to do the eye of thundera, i was thinking maybe some sort of lens? i looked at domed car badges, but they're too thin.

anyone got any ideas? i think the rough size would be 2" diameter, approx 1.5cm thick. doesnt really matter if its clear or not as i could paint the eye on it

EDIT: changed the thread title as this thread has turned into progress of me making the sword :)

Well he's always looking through the thing so how about a clear globe held in the frame of the sword?

Re: what to use for the eye of thundera?

clear globe, interesting, but i'd prefer something in 2 parts. i do have a pool ball lying around though, might try with that, and painting it :)

making one from resin would be best, but i havent got the skill for that! :(

You can get mold builder and clear casting resin from Michaels arts and crafts. Find a sphere or even a hemisphere of whatever size you need and follow the directions on the boxes. :thumbsup

If you need any reference shots of the sword I have some I made up in photoshop a while back. I have them scaled with grids for a 2.5 in and 2 in Eye if I remember correctly. You can preview them here with out the grids. Sword

I would go the crystal route:thumbsup Also, I think it's great that you are going to make this:cool

at the minute for the eye, i've used an old pool ball with moulded sides so it sits flat, looks ok, but i like the eye idea now, cant find them in the uk though! and that site doesnt tell you how much shipping is, they just charge whatever!

Nice reference photo.:D Looking good so far. I like the pool ball idea though its a bit small. I also think it would make it stick out to far. Have you looked at the acrylic spheres I sent you in that link? One of those cut to make a 2 inch slightly flattened dome shape with the Cat symbol painted on the back with maybe some mirroring would look cool.

Here are a couple more ref shots you may find useful

the pool ball i've got is 2 inches, so its pretty spot on i think. from the 2nd reference pic you posted, it looks like the ball idea is perfect too, looks like its a ball from that pic. those acrylic balls look good, but it wouldnt be easy to cut in half clean enough to put a graphic on the other side of it, the yellow of the eye wouldnt show well through the red ball either

Re: what to use for the eye of thundera?

if there are any shops near you that sell stuff like lava lamps, blacklights, and those balls of Sith Lightning, you should check and see if they have these:

it's a leaded crystal ball, about 2 1/2-3 inches (45-60 mm for metric fans) across. this one's smoky, but i think they had clear ones as well.

I always imagined it was flater than that but that pic shows otherwise. I guess it just depends on who was drawing it at the time.

Re: what to use for the eye of thundera?

Here's an idea. How about a domed label? I don't mind contributing the artwork. A domed label is a polyurethane-coated label that is pretty much scratch proof. Mavericklabel.com makes them. I've used them before and they're pretty awesome. The downside is that if the label gets too large, the coating flattens out and the roundness is only around the edges.
