What kind of batteries does the rod.com communicator take?

As I posted the TPZ, I got some batteries that fit into the comm, but when i flip it open, the lights come on, no chirp, and the moire spins quickly and then dies down to a slow pace and then stops altogether.

Im using energizer a23bp-2. when i goto take the batteries out they are hot.
They are 12v, but the inner part of the com says 15 v.

It needs N cells, 1.5v each. I posted at TPZ too.

could that cause the chirp not to work?

also the moire is still spinning so i didnt burn that up did I?

this was bought and built over 6 years ago

if batteries get hot, thats the unused voltage going back to the battery, right?
