What is the best type of mannequin for displaying star wars armor? Was looking for one to display some armor costumes. Any help would be appreciated.
Jim

Lots of cheap fiberglass brand new ones on ebay for around $150 shipped. Just wait for one with a great pose, or you can cut it up a bit to rework it's pose to something a bit better. I picked up all 4 of mine on ebay for anywhere from $99-$150 shipped.

Hey,
thanks for the info. Now what do you use for support? foot or calf? I assume the calf and just slide it up under the costume?
Jim

calf for sure....don't want to drill holes in $2-$300 pairs of boots ;) Some poses lend themselves to be just leaned against a wall. My Han ANH has a hands on hips position and I have him leaning against the wall slightly. It really gives a nice element to the character display.

Hey,
cool, thanks for the info. I think I have figured out what mannequin I want to get. Also once you get the mannequin assembled is it a good idea to glue the hands to the arms, etc, so it doesn't come apart or do they lock in place without glue?

They lock in place without glue. It's a twist and release mechanism. Kinda hard to explain, but it's a real simple design that is very effective. On my Boba I cut each finger at each knuckle plus the thumb like a real hand. Then used coat hangar wire glued in place with liquid nails. Once all done I assembled it and put in place in it's original design at the wrist and it now holds an all bronze "HS" replica Webley. That thing weighs a good 13lbs. so it is a very strong design as well.

i bought a full size fiberglass one from the bay, the arms have screws that are adjustable, the waist moves and hands and feet come off... the only thing i didnt like is that i had to cut between the fingers to put gloves...well that and hes 6'2" but a waist of like 28 inches lol quite a differance from a normal size guy...

I made a PVC armor stand "manny" for around $50. As to suitability, it depends on how much of the character itself shows- if there's exposed skin at the calf, for instance, my stand would be no good for your costume. Full body coverage, tho, hides the PVC, and the only real challenge is the hands, and the wire hanger wire and maybe resin inside the gloves would work well for a gripping pose that still allows the costume to be removed. What character/armor is this for? it might help folks answer with useful ideas. I can post pics of the stand later if you like, I'll have to take the armor off it- which is all steel, btw, so you can get an idea of how strong the stand turned out.

i downloaded a complete direction file for a moveable, fully articulating, full size PVC dummy, its a big file but i can email it to you if you want, they run like 50 dollars plus time to build! its really cool, the guy put his Batman costume on it...
heres the first and last pic of it...

I like that setup- the joints are really cool, and the foot design is kickin'! I considered using the iron pipe fitting on mine, but given the weight going on it, I figured the PVC would would probably strip out the threads. I used the pressure fittings in 2", as it looks like he also did, but used street 90's at the shoulders and 45's at the elbows, with bungee cords strung through the arms from wrists up to the neck and then up to the top of the "head" pipe. The bungees provide tension to hold a pose, aided by the fit of the spigot and hub connections on the fittings. I only glued on side of any fitting, so the joint and the next 'bone' down would work as a single unit for posing.

I also used a male and female fitting combination at the waist, so the top half could be removed for shipping or storage. The legs, as it was intended to stand all the time are just straight runs of 2" PVC, which I lower down onto feet made from 1-1/2" PVC and a tee, with end caps. I don't pose it with boots involved, so the feet are mostly for stability- the armor can weigh almost as much as I do, so having it pitch forward on someone would be a BAD thing. As a finished unit tho, it's free standing, and balanced, and above all, strong enough to handle the job I ask of it.

I made a duct tape mannequin of myself so my costumes fit it perfectly. That's a great thing to make, google it and you will see they are easy to make.

I built a display mannequin known as PIPEMAN!

Easy to make out of 2" pipe and fittings for the body,
a piece of 6" pipe cut in half for the shoulders,
a piece of plywood for hips/butt;
and the hard part;
2" dowels in a base and I turned the "head" out of plastic,
tho' that could be wood, also.

He breaks down into easily transported pieces.
The arms aren't glued on so he can be dressed.

Sorry to resurrect a long dead thread, but I was wondering what everyone's thoughts on this kind of mannequin for a display might be?

Plush Covered Adult Bendable Form - Flexible - Mannequin

I remember people mentioning making mannequins from PVC, and for those of us less technically inclined but unwilling to spend on a mannequin, is this a good compromise? My biggest concern though is how to keep it standing without wires...
